Overview

Automatic Data Processing, commonly known as ADP, is a United States-based business-services and enterprise-software company focused on payroll processing, human capital management, workforce administration, benefits administration, and professional employer organization services. Its customers range from small businesses to large multinational employers, and its offerings combine cloud software with managed operational services in areas where accuracy, regulatory compliance, data security, and recurring execution are essential. The company began in 1949 when Henry Taub established Automatic Payrolls, Inc. with his brother Joe Taub. Frank Lautenberg, who later became a United States senator, joined the young business in its early years and became a full partner in 1954 after contributing to sales and marketing. ADP's early model was based on performing payroll calculations and related administrative work for other companies. In 1957, it adopted punched-card data-processing equipment, replacing much of the manual calculator work. The following year, the company changed its name to Automatic Data Processing, reflecting its broader technology-enabled operating model. ADP became a public company in 1961. At that point it had approximately 300 clients and 125 employees. Over subsequent decades, it expanded beyond payroll into sector-specific data processing, brokerage services, dealer management systems, and outsourced employment administration. These businesses helped establish the acquisition-led and recurring-revenue model that remains central to the company, although several non-core divisions were later separated into independent companies. Today, ADP's principal operating activities are generally organized around employer services and professional employer organization services. Its software and services support payroll, tax filing, time and attendance, recruiting, talent management, benefits, employee data, compliance, scheduling, contractor administration, and other workforce processes. Important platforms include RUN Powered by ADP for small businesses, ADP Workforce Now for midsize employers, and ADP Lyric HCM for larger and more complex organizations. ADP also provides global payroll capabilities and workforce-management products through a combination of internally developed technology and acquisitions. A distinctive part of ADP's public profile is its employment-data business. The ADP National Employment Report uses aggregated and anonymized payroll information to estimate private-sector employment trends in the United States. It is released before the federal employment report and is widely followed by economists, financial institutions, journalists, and policymakers. In 2022, the report was redesigned in collaboration with Stanford University's Digital Economy Lab. ADP later introduced a weekly preliminary product known as NER Pulse. The company has also reshaped itself through significant divestitures. Its brokerage-services operation became Broadridge Financial Solutions in 2007, while its dealer-services business was separated as CDK Global in 2014. These transactions narrowed ADP's strategic focus toward human capital and employer services. More recent expansion has emphasized workforce technology, global payroll, digital payments, freelancer and contractor management, workflow automation, and enterprise workforce management. Maria Black has served as chief executive officer since 2023. ADP's current identity is therefore that of a large, internationally operated HCM and payroll platform whose competitive position rests on scale, regulatory expertise, customer data, embedded workflows, and dependable recurring service delivery.

History

ADP began in 1949 as Automatic Payrolls, a manual payroll-processing business founded by Henry Taub and Joe Taub. Frank Lautenberg joined the young company in sales and marketing and became a partner in 1954. The organization’s first major technological shift came in 1957, when it installed punched-card equipment to automate data handling. It changed its name to Automatic Data Processing the following year. In 1961, Oppenheimer & Company helped take ADP public. At the time, the company had roughly 300 clients, 125 employees and approximately $400,000 in revenue. The public listing provided a foundation for expansion into specialized industries. In 1962 ADP opened a Wall Street office serving brokerage firms. That activity grew into a brokerage-services division, which was eventually spun off in 2007 as Broadridge Financial Solutions. ADP expanded through both internal development and acquisitions during the 1970s. Its dealer-services activities began in 1973 after acquisitions including National Inventory Control System and CSI Computer Systems. The company later completed many additional acquisitions in dealer-management technology. It also acquired Time Sharing Limited in 1974 and Cyphernetics in 1975, broadening its computing and data-processing capabilities. By the mid-1980s ADP’s annual revenue had exceeded $1 billion, and its payroll systems were processing paychecks for a substantial share of the United States workforce. The company expanded internationally and strengthened its human-resources outsourcing operations. In 1996 it entered the professional employer organization market through the acquisition of Staff Management Systems. Further acquisitions included German provider Autonom and GSI in the 1990s, followed by Chessington Computer Centre in the United Kingdom in 1998. ADP continued to manage a portfolio of industry-specific technology businesses. It acquired Kerridge Computer in 2006, adding dealer-management-system capabilities, and later acquired Cobalt and other automotive technology assets. The brokerage-services separation created Broadridge in 2007. The dealer-services business was reorganized as CDK Global in 2014 and spun off as a standalone company, allowing ADP to concentrate more strongly on employer services and PEO operations. During the 2010s ADP shifted its product architecture toward cloud-based human-capital management. Acquisitions included The Marcus Buckingham Company in 2017, Global Cash Card in 2017, WorkMarket in 2018 and Celergo in 2018. These transactions expanded ADP’s offerings in employee engagement, digital payments, freelancer administration and global payroll. The company also developed a portfolio spanning payroll, tax, benefits, talent, time, compliance and analytics. ADP’s public role expanded through its National Employment Report, which uses anonymized payroll information to estimate private-sector job growth. The report is released before the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics report and became a regular reference point for economic observers. In 2022 ADP redesigned the report with Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab. In the middle of 2025, ADP stopped providing employment and earnings data to the Federal Reserve, while introducing the weekly NER Pulse. Recent expansion has focused on filling gaps in enterprise workforce management and compensation. ADP acquired workflow-automation company Sora in 2023 and announced its acquisition of WorkForce Software in October 2024. WorkForce’s capabilities in scheduling, time, attendance, leave, forecasting and employee communications complemented ADP’s existing HCM suite. In October 2025 ADP announced the acquisition of Pequity, adding compensation-planning and pay-decision tools. Maria Black has served as CEO since 2023. ADP remains an active public company headquartered in Roseland, New Jersey, with operations in more than 140 countries and territories.
