Overview

Aegidius SE is a German insurance holding company registered as a Societas Europaea (SE) and headquartered in Hanover. It is the group parent of the WERTGARANTIE Group (stylised WERTGARANTIE Group), a family of specialist insurers and warranty service providers that traces its origins to 1963. The group operates in eight European countries and employs more than 1,300 people, with its main office in Hanover. Its business is built on repair-cost and warranty insurance for everyday consumer goods — smartphones, televisions, household appliances, watches, hearing aids, bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters — as well as for gas, water and electrical lines in buildings. The group's operating insurance companies write the primary policies, while Aegidius SE itself acts as the group's internal reinsurer, assuming a substantial share of the risks from contracts concluded by the operating entities. In the 2024 financial year the WERTGARANTIE Group reported gross written premiums of EUR 402.3 million. The group works with roughly 7,200 insurance intermediaries across Europe, including specialist retailers, purchasing cooperatives, chain stores, manufacturer service networks and manufacturers. The group's product brands include WERTGARANTIE, the specialist insurer and specialist-retail partner; linexo, the bike expert for insurance, leasing and mobile services; Société Française de Garantie (SFG), described as the French market leader in extended warranties; and GARANTE, a service-oriented Spanish insurance specialist. The group markets itself as a "lifestyle insurer" at the heart of Hanover and promotes sustainability through its "Reparieren statt Wegwerfen" (repair instead of throwing away) initiative, which aims to extend the life of technical devices and bicycles and reduce electronic waste. Aegidius SE is a private group holding company. Its origins lie in the Kundendienst-Gesellschaft für Fernsehgeräte m.b.H. & Comp. KG founded by Kurt Jodexnis in Langenhagen in 1963. Over six decades the business expanded from television-set insurance into a multi-line European specialist insurance group, adding pet insurance (Agila, 1994–2022), bicycle cover (1999), international expansion from 2003, and acquisitions in France (SFG, 2014) and Spain (Garante, 2018). The group converted to the SE legal form in 2020 and renamed its parent reinsurer Aegidius SE in 2023. In 2024 the bicycle and e-bike business was bundled under the Linexo by Wertgarantie brand.

History

The origins of the WERTGARANTIE Group go back to 1963, when Kurt Jodexnis founded the Kundendienst-Gesellschaft für Fernsehgeräte m.b.H. & Comp. KG in Langenhagen, a company insuring television sets. In 1970 the business was converted into a stock corporation, the Elektro Dauer Garantie Reparaturversicherung AG (EDG). In 1980 the Videowartungsring GmbH & Co. KG (VWR) was founded, and in 1988 EDG and VWR merged to form WertGarantie Technische Versicherung AG. In 1994 the group added a new business line with the Agila Haustierversicherung AG (pet insurance). In 1999 bicycle cover was introduced, and Patrick Döring joined the company. From the 2000s the group internationalised, first entering Austria in 2003 and later expanding into further European markets. In 2014 it acquired the French warranty provider Société Française de Garantie (SFG), and in 2018 the Spanish insurance broker Garante followed. During this period the group also invested increasingly in its Hanover site and opened a conference centre in 2017. In 2020 the Wertgarantie AG changed its legal form to become Wertgarantie SE. In 2022 the pet insurer Agila left the WERTGARANTIE Group and went to the Luxembourg investment company JAB Holding; in exchange the WERTGARANTIE Group received shares in the London-based Pinnacle Pet Group (PPG), which is part of JAB Holding. In 2023 the group parent Aegidius Rückversicherung AG was renamed Aegidius SE. In 2024 the bicycle and e-bike division was bundled under the brand Linexo by Wertgarantie. The group describes itself as a group of specialist insurers and warranty service providers grown over more than 60 years, operating in eight European countries with more than 1,300 employees. Its main office is in Hanover, where it offers careers across more than 30 specialist areas. The group's brands include WERTGARANTIE, linexo, Société Française de Garantie and GARANTE. It works with roughly 7,200 insurance intermediaries in Europe, including specialist retailers, purchasing cooperatives, chain stores, manufacturer service networks and manufacturers. In the 2024 financial year the group's gross written premiums were EUR 402.3 million. The group runs the "Reparieren statt Wegwerfen" initiative against electronic waste, featuring studies on consumer repair behaviour and the sculpture "Wertgigant" by action artist HA Schult, made from discarded electrical appliances and shown in several German and Austrian cities. It also supports the annual "Aktion Wunschbaum" before Christmas, organised by apprentices, which fulfils wishes of children from socially disadvantaged families.
