Overview

AIC tech Inc. (エーアイシーテック株式会社) is a Japanese manufacturer of capacitors and metallized films headquartered in Moka, Tochigi Prefecture. The company was established on April 1, 2020, as a carve-out of the capacitor business (excluding the small film capacitor business) and the metallized film business of Hitachi Chemical and Hitachi AIC. It was first incorporated in February 2020 as AIC SPC Co., Ltd., with Hitachi Chemical holding 60% and Hitachi AIC 40%, and then renamed AIC tech Inc. when its shares were transferred to Nantong Jianghai Capacitor Co., Ltd. of Nantong, China, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chinese capacitor maker. The company traces its technological lineage to Hitachi's capacitor operations, which date back to the 1940s and 1960s. Its predecessor entities include Shinmachi Capacitor Co., Ltd., founded in November 1967 as a dedicated film capacitor factory of Hitachi Capacitor, and Hitachi AIC Inc., whose roots go back to Anritsu Electric's capacitor division that became independent in 1949 as Annaka Electric Co., Ltd. Over the decades these businesses developed aluminum electrolytic capacitors, film capacitors, and metallized films for a wide range of industrial and automotive applications. AIC tech's product portfolio centers on aluminum electrolytic capacitors (screw-terminal, lead-type, and board-mounting types), film capacitors (case-type and aluminum case-type), and metallized films for packaging, construction materials, and agricultural uses. The company also offers large-capacity energy storage devices such as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC) and lithium-ion capacitors (LIC), as well as a simple water-sealed carbon dioxide treatment system for strawberry seedlings and disaster-prevention sheets. Its capacitors are used in power energy, industrial equipment, power supplies, and electronic devices where electrical energy conversion and control are required. The company positions itself as a capacitor manufacturer that can meet diverse needs from small to large capacity, emphasizing research and development in power electronics, including low ESR, high durability, and miniaturization for inverters, converters, and power supply units. It maintains quality management systems compliant with international standards such as ISO 9001. AIC tech operates a head office and factory in Moka, Tochigi; a Tokyo office in Chiyoda, Tokyo; an Osaka office in Yodogawa, Osaka; a Nagoya office in Nakamura, Nagoya; and a Kitakami manufacturing site in Kitakami, Iwate. It continues to release new products such as the HUC series of ultra-small large-capacity board-mounting aluminum electrolytic capacitors, the ZG series (500WV) high-ripple board-mounting aluminum electrolytic capacitors, and the WF series of small large-capacity screw-terminal aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

History

AIC tech Inc. was established on April 1, 2020, as a carve-out of the capacitor business (excluding the small film capacitor business) and the metallized film business of Hitachi Chemical and Hitachi AIC. The company was first incorporated in February 2020 as AIC SPC Co., Ltd., with Hitachi Chemical holding 60% and Hitachi AIC 40%. On April 1, 2020, the businesses were succeeded by AIC SPC through a company split, and all shares of AIC SPC were transferred to Nantong Jianghai Capacitor Co., Ltd., a capacitor manufacturer headquartered in Nantong, China. AIC SPC was renamed AIC tech Inc. and headquartered in the same Moka, Tochigi location as Hitachi AIC. With this, the Hitachi Chemical Group withdrew from the capacitor business (excluding the small film capacitor business) and the metallized film business. The predecessor history is divided between Shinmachi Capacitor Co., Ltd. and Hitachi AIC Inc. Shinmachi Capacitor was established in November 1967 as a dedicated film capacitor factory of Hitachi Capacitor, starting production of non-inductive polyester and inductive polystyrene capacitors. It began production of tape-wound metallized polyester capacitors in April 1972, resin-dip metallized polyester capacitors in October 1974, and in December 1987 became the first in Japan to produce resin-molded surface-mount capacitors. It started production of surface-mount PPS capacitors in July 1990, automotive electrical capacitors in August 1994, automotive HID capacitors in January 2000, and smoothing and DC/DC converter capacitors for hybrid vehicle drives in October 2004. In October 2009, through an absorption-type split with Hitachi AIC, it took over Hitachi AIC's aluminum electrolytic capacitor and metallized products businesses, increased capital to 490 million yen, became a subsidiary of Shinkobe Electric Machinery, changed its name to Hitachi AIC Inc., and moved its head office to Toshima, Tokyo. Hitachi AIC's own history began in April 1949 when the capacitor division of Anritsu Electric became independent as Annaka Electric Co., Ltd. in Minato, Tokyo. In October 1962, Annaka Electric merged with Anritsu Seiki to become Annaka Electric Seiki Co., Ltd. In January 1965, Hitachi Chemical established Hitachi Capacitor Co., Ltd. in Chiyoda, Tokyo, which began operations in April 1965 after taking over the capacitor sales business from Hitachi Chemical. In October 1965, Hitachi Capacitor merged with Annaka Electric Seiki as the surviving company and changed its name to Hitachi Capacitor Co., Ltd. In August 1979, it took over the business of Ninomiya Kogyo and began wiring board sales. In October 1990, it merged with Meiko Meguro Kogyo and Sanki Kogyo and changed its name to Hitachi AIC Inc. In August 2001, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Chemical through a share exchange. In April 2008, it absorbed Hitachi Chemical Electronics and moved its head office to Ninomiya, Haga District, Tochigi (now Kugeda, Moka, Tochigi). In October 2009, it split off its aluminum electrolytic capacitor and metallized products businesses to Shinmachi Capacitor and transferred them to Shinkobe Electric Machinery, changing its name to Hitachi Chemical Electronics. In April 2012, the sales window became Shinkobe Electric Machinery; in April 2013, it became Hitachi Chemical; and in January 2016, it became a subsidiary of Hitachi Chemical. In April 2020, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, film capacitor (E50, E51, E52, E53, E54, E55, E57, E59, E60, E61, E62, E63, E64, E65, E66, E67, E69, E70, E90, MLC, MLC2, MKCP4, MKCP4T), and metallized products businesses were transferred by company split to Nantong Jianghai Capacitor Co., Ltd., and AIC tech Inc. was newly launched. After the carve-out, AIC tech opened a Chubu Satellite Office in Nakamura, Nagoya, Aichi in August 2021, and relocated its Tokyo Sales Office to Chiyoda, Tokyo in February 2023, renaming it the Tokyo Office. The company continues to develop and release new capacitor products, including the HUC series, ZG series, and WF series, and participates in exhibitions such as TECHNO-FRONTIER.
