Overview
AlefAlefAlef (Hebrew: אאא, also known by the expanded name "AlefAlefAlef — House for Hebrew Typography") is an Israeli independent type foundry and collective of Hebrew type designers. Founded in December 2011 by typographer, designer and entrepreneur Avraham Cornfeld, the group operates an online store selling original Hebrew fonts designed by its members, giving Israeli creators convenient access to distinctive Hebrew typefaces. It is regarded as one of the leading and most popular Hebrew font companies active today. The collective brings together independent, ambitious and thorough designers who believe that innovative typography can influence the cultural and design landscape in Israel. Through letters, they seek to shape the present and future of the Hebrew language and to express Israeli identity in its many shades. Their catalog includes unique, refined and practical Hebrew fonts that preserve the rich tradition of Hebrew while aiming to say something new — to ask questions, challenge accepted perceptions and unsettle the familiar. The designers work with a deep awareness of their responsibility as letter designers whose work defines public space, striving for maximum aesthetics, legibility and functionality in the service of precise visual communication. AlefAlefAlef's catalog offers graphic designers and letter lovers a selection of Hebrew fonts suited to running text, signage, logos and headlines. Beyond design and aesthetics, the fonts incorporate advanced technological features, and new versions are released periodically. The foundry's main catalog comprises dozens of font families, including popular typefaces such as "Almoni" (also known by its first version's name "Almoni Du-Leshoni" or "Almoni New"), "Ploni", "Atlas" and "Almoni Narrow". New fonts are presented through an opening or poster and at a launch event. In addition to its core font business, AlefAlefAlef operates several related ventures. At the end of 2017 it launched "Fontimoniim" (פונטימונים), a separate brand and library of Hebrew display and headline fonts, often experimental, with basic features, fewer weights and significantly lower prices than AlefAlefAlef's main catalog. The group also publishes "Ot-Ot-Ot" (אות־אות־אות), an online magazine on Israeli and international typography and graphic design that grew out of the original AlefAlefAlef blog. Between 2015 and the end of 2017, the "Alef Objects" (אל"ף חפצים) line produced typographic objects such as fabric bags printed with a letter, cushions shaped like the letter Alef, and wallets featuring the Hebrew alphabet. The collective also organizes periodic typographic events, including the annual Hanukkah event "Nes Gadol" (נגהפ). The group is made up of a small team of regular designers, all graduates of graphic design departments at Israeli design schools, who work in typography. AlefAlefAlef was founded by Avraham Cornfeld, a typographer, designer and entrepreneur, a graduate of the visual communications department at Shenkar and of the photography program at Hadassah College Jerusalem, and a co-founder of the Anti-Itled magazine. Cornfeld established the site after having several fonts he had designed that he wanted to publish; he approached designers Nadav Barkan, Noi Neuman, Lia Ofir and Shani Barber, who together established the group and the website. Later, Eran Bachrach, Shavit Yaakov and Roi Sardi joined.
History
AlefAlefAlef was founded in December 2011 by Avraham Cornfeld, a typographer, designer and entrepreneur, a graduate of the visual communications department at Shenkar and of the photography program at Hadassah College Jerusalem, and a co-founder of the Anti-Itled magazine. Cornfeld established the website after having several fonts he had designed that he wanted to publish. He approached designers Nadav Barkan, Noi Neuman, Lia Ofir and Shani Barber, who together established the group and the website. Later, Eran Bachrach, Shavit Yaakov and Roi Sardi joined the group. The first AlefAlefAlef fonts were launched at Hanukkah 2011. The annual Hanukkah event "Nes Gadol" (נגהפ) officially began in 2012 and was celebrated annually from 2012 to 2016, bringing together typographers from across the country for one day. The event was held again in 2021 and is expected to return in future years. Its name derives from the letters stamped on the dreidel — Nun, Gimel, Hei, Pei — symbolizing "a great miracle happened here." Over the years, AlefAlefAlef expanded beyond its core font catalog. Between 2015 and the end of 2017, the "Alef Objects" (אל"ף חפצים) production line, founded by siblings Avraham and Shifra Cornfeld, created products marked by Hebrew typography, such as fabric bags printed with a letter, cushions shaped like the letter Alef, and wallets featuring the Hebrew alphabet, which gained considerable popularity and success. From 2016 to 2018, the "Hebrew Task" (משימה עברית) Instagram project engaged the audience with a weekly typographic task. At the end of 2017, AlefAlefAlef launched "Fontimoniim" (פונטימונים), a new brand for display and headline fonts. Unlike AlefAlefAlef, Fontimoniim's font library consists exclusively of Hebrew fonts, mostly experimental, with basic features, without many weights, and at significantly lower prices than AlefAlefAlef's fonts. During 2018, the fonts Parshandata and Omes were moved from the AlefAlefAlef catalog to the Fontimoniim catalog. The group's blog evolved over time into "Ot-Ot-Ot" (אות־אות־אות), a refined typography magazine. Ot-Ot-Ot is an online magazine dealing with typography, graphic design and related topics. Its writing team includes writers from the front row of the local graphic design world, as well as external contributors such as Yeronimus, Amir Peretz, Adi Aharoni, Maya Yoffe, Avner Pinchover, Tamir Pomerantz, Elad Yana, Hadas Zohar, Dadi Cohen, Tomer Lichtash and Tal Solomon Vardi, among other guest writers. Readers receive a review of what is happening in the design niche and typography in particular, including feature articles, opinions and recommendations, interviews, exhibition reviews, calls for participation in projects and exhibitions, events, and publications about new fonts and their design methods. AlefAlefAlef also organizes periodic typographic events where Alef Objects products are sold, new AlefAlefAlef fonts are launched, or an original exhibition is presented. The group has created 35 fonts, including popular typefaces such as "Almoni" (also known by its first version's name "Almoni Du-Leshoni" or "Almoni New"), "Ploni", "Atlas", "Almoni Narrow" and others. New fonts are presented through an opening or poster and at a launch event. The group has 8 regular designers, all graduates of graphic design departments at design schools in Israel, working in typography: Avraham Cornfeld (Shenkar, visual communications; Hadassah College, photography), Eran Ben Barak (Bezalel, visual communications), Nadav Barkan (Shenkar, visual communications; MA in design from LCC London), Shavit Yaakov (Goren School, Emek Yezreel Academic College), Eran Bachrach (Vital-Shenkar, visual communications), Anna Horesh (MA in visual communications from Moscow Polytechnic University), Noi Neuman (Bezalel, visual communications), and others.
