History
AlGooru's origins trace back to two earlier Saudi education-technology initiatives. Mohannad Al-Jasser founded the platform "Alamni" (علمني) in 2016 to connect students with private tutors through online lessons. The idea was inspired by his own experience in 2014, while studying in Canada, when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and turned to communicating with teachers via Skype. That platform won the Technology Pioneers Accelerator program run by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and also achieved success in a hackathon organized by Techstars and the Ministry of Education. In 2020, the two platforms were merged under the name AlGooru, which went on to greater success. AlGooru was founded in 2021 by Khalid Abu Qasim. In the same period, it was accepted into the Techstars Riyadh business accelerator and raised USD 600,000 in its initial stage of investment. In 2021 it also secured SAR 2.25 million in a pre-seed investment round. In 2022 it raised USD 1.8 million from several investment funds, including RAZ Group, RZM Investment, 100 Ventures and RAY Investment. The company signed several partnership agreements with well-known platforms such as Rwaq and Anab. It has received support and incubation from several entities, including King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) represented by the Code Center, and the Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority (Monsha'at). In 2023, AlGooru joined the Saudi Unicorns program, sponsored by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Misk Foundation, to prepare it for a billion-dollar valuation. By its own account, AlGooru has grown to more than 1,350 expert teachers from over 15 nationalities, serving more than 15,000 families and more than 15,000 successful students, with services in more than 20 academic and non-academic subjects. It describes itself as the first platform qualified by the National Center for e-Learning to provide private education services in the Kingdom, under qualification number Q001023012000100. The company is a Saudi company headquartered in Riyadh with commercial registry number 4030418602. AlGooru has received numerous local and international awards and recognitions, including first place in the "Ibtikar" award from Monsha'at, acceptance into the first cohort of the Saudi Unicorns program, selection among the top 20 startups at the Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC2022), a semifinalist position at the GSV Elite 200 GSV Summit, and a place on HolonIQ's list of the top 50 promising edtech startups in the MENA region. It also won the SME2022 award as the best private-tutoring edtech company in the region.
