Overview

Alkim Alkali Kimya A.Ş. is a Turkish chemical company founded in 1948 by chemical engineer Hasan Vedat Kora as a small sole proprietorship in Istanbul. It grew into one of Turkey's principal producers of sodium sulfate and related industrial chemicals, and today operates three chemical facilities — the Koralkim sodium sulfate plants at Dazkırı-Acıgöl in Afyonkarahisar, a potassium sulfate production facility, and the Ankara-Çayırhan sodium sulfate plant — as well as a paper subsidiary, Alkim Kağıt San. Tic. A.Ş., in which it holds an 80% stake. The company's product range includes sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate, salt, magnesium chloride and liquid products, serving industries such as detergents, textiles, glass, paper and agriculture. Alkim was established as a limited liability company under the name Alkali Madencilik Ltd. in 1957, and in 1963 it entered a joint venture with Essex Interore Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon, to develop sodium sulfate operations in Turkey. The partnership was formalized by a special Council of Ministers resolution dated 8 May 1963, creating Alkim Alkali Kimya A.Ş. In 1971 the American partner transferred its shares to the Kora family and withdrew from Turkey. The company has been publicly traded on Borsa Istanbul under the ticker ALKIM, with a public share ratio of 57.62%, and its paid-in capital is 300,000,000 TL. Alkim emphasizes sustainability, health and safety, and social responsibility, supporting schools, health centers, libraries and parks in the regions where its plants are located. The company markets itself as a long-established Turkish industrial brand — "72 years" of experience — and continues to invest in capacity, including a potassium sulfate investment announced in 2020 and 2021.

History

Alkim Alkali Kimya A.Ş. traces its origins to 1948, when chemical engineer Hasan Vedat Kora established a sole proprietorship in Istanbul under the name Hasan Vedat Kora Co. and began producing certain chemicals. Kora had graduated from Istanbul University Engineering Faculty as an M.Sc. chemical engineer and started his career at the Turkish State Monopoly Research Center. In 1953 he obtained a sodium sulfate mine concession (numbered İR 73, dated 17 September 1953) at Lake Acıgöl in southwestern Anatolia, and his private company was registered as No. 49.519 at the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. On 15 January 1954 he obtained his first patent for the production of soda from sodium sulfate, and he later received six more patents for various chemical production methods. On 1 March 1956 he received mining licence İR 2197 for sodium sulfate production at Lake Bolluk near Konya-Cihanbeyli. In 1957, H. Vedat Kora and his wife E. Şükran Kora established Alkali Minerals Ltd., registered in the Istanbul Registry of Commerce under No. 65.070 on 29 May 1957, and all mining licences were transferred to the new company. On 14 March 1962, Kora's brother Cihat Kora became a shareholder in Alkali Minerals Ltd. In 1963, Alkim Alkali Kimya A.Ş. was founded as a joint venture together with Alkali Minerals Ltd., the Kora family, and American Essex Interore Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon. Because of laws and regulations governing mining activities with foreign companies, permission was granted by a government decree dated 8 May 1963. All mining concessions of Alkali Madencilik Ltd. were transferred to the newly established Alkim Alkali Kimya A.Ş., and the first modern sodium sulfate plant was constructed in Konya. In 1971, the American partner Essex Interore Inc. transferred its shares to the Kora family and withdrew from Turkey. The company describes itself as having been established in Istanbul in 1948 by Chemical Engineer Vedat Kora as a small manufacturing workshop operating as a sole proprietorship; it was converted into a limited liability company under the name Alkali Madencilik Ltd. in 1957, and began to expand in 1962 with the participation of Pharmacist Cihat Kora. In 1963, Alkim entered into a partnership with Essex Interore Inc., a subsidiary of Exxon, to develop sodium sulfate operations in Turkey. Due to the great significance of this matter for Turkey, Alkim Alkali Kimya A.Ş. was established on 8 May 1963 by a special resolution of the Council of Ministers, numbered 6/1728, in accordance with the laws in effect at that time. Subsequently, in 1971, the American partner Essex Interore Inc. transferred its shares to the Kora family and withdrew from Turkey. Today Alkim operates three chemical facilities — the Afyonkarahisar, Dazkırı-Acıgöl-Koralkim sodium sulfate plants, a potassium sulfate production facility, and the Ankara-Çayırhan sodium sulfate plant — and one paper facility through its subsidiary Alkim Kağıt San. Tic. A.Ş., in which it holds an 80% stake. The company is publicly traded on Borsa Istanbul under the code ALKIM, with a public share ratio of 57.62% and paid-in capital of 300,000,000 TL. Its activities include operating mining areas, production and sales of chemical materials, and exports and imports. Recent developments include a potassium sulfate investment, with an incentive certificate announced in January 2020 and further investment news in September 2021, and the supply of crystallization technology by Veolia announced in January 2020.
