Overview
Alstom is a French multinational rail-transport company supplying passenger trains, locomotives, trams, signalling, rail infrastructure, digital control systems and maintenance services. Its customers include national railway companies, urban-transit operators, infrastructure managers, public authorities and governments. The company operates across both mainline and urban rail, with activities spanning high-speed, intercity, regional, suburban and automated metro transport. The business originated in 1928 as Alsthom, a combination of the electrical-engineering division of Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques and Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston. Its early activities were concentrated on electrical equipment, heavy engineering and power-generation technology. It entered railway manufacturing in 1932 through the acquisition of Constructions Électriques de France, which produced electric locomotives and related equipment. During the following decades, Alsthom expanded into marine engineering, power generation, electrical systems and transport equipment. Its railway activities became particularly prominent through the development and production of trains for France’s TGV network. The corporate name changed from Alsthom to Alstom in 1998, after the business had operated as GEC Alsthom following a 1989 combination with the power-systems activities of the British General Electric Company. Alstom subsequently went through major portfolio changes. A severe financial crisis in the early 2000s led to restructuring, asset sales and European Union-approved state support. The company divested or separated several energy, marine and industrial activities while retaining and later rebuilding important power capabilities. In 2015, most of the energy business was sold to General Electric, leaving Alstom primarily focused on rail transportation. Rail has since become the company’s central identity and operating platform. Its portfolio includes the Avelia high-speed family, Citadis trams, Metropolis metros, regional and suburban trains, locomotives, signalling and train-control systems, traffic-management software, electrification and long-term maintenance. The 2021 acquisition of Bombardier Transportation substantially enlarged Alstom’s rolling-stock range, installed base, service contracts, signalling activities and geographical reach. The combined company became one of the world’s largest dedicated rail-equipment suppliers. Alstom’s business is project-based and typically involves multiyear tenders, engineering, manufacturing, testing, commissioning and service obligations. Revenue and profitability are therefore affected by public-transit budgets, procurement schedules, inflation, supply-chain availability, industrial execution, safety requirements, foreign-exchange movements and the timing of customer acceptance. In addition to selling vehicles, Alstom seeks recurring revenue through fleet maintenance, refurbishment, spare parts, digital services and infrastructure support. Its positioning is that of an integrated rail partner capable of combining vehicles, signalling, infrastructure and lifecycle services rather than a narrowly focused train manufacturer.
History
Alstom began in 1928 as Alsthom, formed through the combination of Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston and the electrical-engineering activities of Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques. It initially operated as a heavy electrical and engineering enterprise. In 1932, the acquisition of Constructions Électriques de France brought electric-locomotive manufacturing into the business and established an enduring transport component. The company expanded during the postwar industrial period. In 1969, Compagnie Générale d’Électricité became its majority shareholder. A 1976 merger with shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique created Alsthom Atlantique and broadened the company into marine engineering. In railway manufacturing, Alsthom delivered its first TGV to SNCF in 1978. TGV technology later produced several high-speed records and became one of the most visible foundations of the company’s rail reputation. Between 1989 and 1998, the company operated as GEC Alsthom after combining with the power-systems division of the British General Electric Company. This period brought acquisitions in rail vehicles, signalling and industrial power, including Metro-Cammell, Linke-Hofmann-Busch and SASIB’s rail-signalling business. The company became publicly listed in Paris in 1998 and adopted the Alstom name. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Alstom still had extensive energy, marine and industrial operations. It acquired and reorganised power businesses, but entered a serious financial crisis by 2003 after weak markets, heavy liabilities and costs associated with a turbine design problem. A European Union-approved rescue involved French state participation and required major disposals, including grid activities, a diesel-locomotive business, marine assets and other subsidiaries. The French state’s stake was later sold to Bouygues. Alstom continued to restructure its portfolio during the following decade. It developed wind and hydropower activities, expanded rail manufacturing internationally and acquired additional transport capabilities, including a controlling interest in Fiat Ferroviaria. In 2014, after a contested bid process involving General Electric and Siemens, Alstom agreed to sell its power and grid businesses to General Electric. The transaction was completed in 2015, leaving Alstom principally devoted to rail transport. The company then pursued growth through rail platforms, signalling, services and international projects. Its most consequential transaction was the acquisition of Bombardier Transportation, completed in 2021. This brought together complementary train families, production sites, installed fleets, service agreements and signalling operations. Alstom now presents itself as a full-spectrum rail supplier, combining rolling stock with control systems, infrastructure, digital tools and long-term maintenance. Its modern history is consequently defined by the transition from a diversified electrical-industrial group to a specialist global rail company.
