Overview

Amazon Bedrock is a generative AI service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing business of Amazon.com, Inc. It gives customers a managed way to access foundation models and use them in applications without having to host and operate the underlying model infrastructure themselves. The service is aimed at organizations and developers building generative AI features, rather than at consumers seeking a standalone chatbot. Bedrock brings together models from Amazon and third-party model providers through AWS services and interfaces. Available model choices and capabilities can vary over time and by region. Its broader platform features are designed to support application development around model access, including orchestration and agent-building capabilities, retrieval of information from organizational data, model customization options, and controls intended to help manage responsible use. Customers can select tools appropriate to their workloads while using AWS’s cloud environment and associated security, identity, and infrastructure services. Amazon introduced Bedrock in 2023 and made it generally available later that year. It is part of AWS’s effort to provide cloud infrastructure and managed services for generative AI, positioning the product as a flexible platform rather than a single proprietary model. The commercial offering is delivered through AWS and is generally used on a pay-as-you-go basis, subject to the service’s pricing, model-provider terms, and regional availability. AWS is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, and is owned by publicly traded Amazon.com, Inc.

History

Amazon Bedrock emerged as AWS developed a managed-services offering for generative artificial intelligence. The service was introduced in 2023, when businesses were seeking ways to experiment with foundation models while avoiding the operational burden of hosting model infrastructure and integrating multiple model providers independently. Bedrock’s product approach was to make model access available within AWS and provide supporting tools for building applications around those models. AWS subsequently made Bedrock generally available in 2023. Its marketplace-style model access has included models from Amazon and external providers, with the selection evolving over time. This multi-provider approach distinguishes the product from a single-model offering: customers can evaluate different models for different tasks while building within a common managed service. Model availability is subject to AWS announcements, provider arrangements, and regional rollout. The product has expanded beyond basic model invocation toward application-development functions. These have included tools for connecting models to business information, coordinating multi-step workflows, building agents, adapting models for particular use cases, and applying controls to model inputs and outputs. Such capabilities reflect the needs of organizations deploying generative AI in production, where data access, integration, governance, and operational safeguards matter alongside model quality. Amazon Bedrock is a product brand of AWS, not a separate company. Its commercial and technical development is part of AWS’s broader cloud-services business and Amazon’s investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and services. The platform’s market position rests on managed access to multiple models and integration with AWS’s cloud, identity, security, and application-development environment. Its scope and feature set continue to change as AWS adds models and service capabilities.
