Overview

Advanced Micro Devices, commonly known as AMD, is an American multinational semiconductor company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Founded in 1969 by Jerry Sanders and seven former Fairchild Semiconductor colleagues, the company initially produced logic devices, memory products, and other integrated circuits. It later became one of the principal competitors in the x86 processor industry and has expanded into graphics, servers, gaming consoles, embedded systems, field-programmable gate arrays, and artificial-intelligence acceleration. AMD’s early business was built partly on second-source manufacturing, supplying compatible versions of products designed by other semiconductor companies. In the 1970s it entered the microprocessor market with the Am9080, a reverse-engineered version of Intel’s 8080, and subsequently developed licensing and cross-licensing relationships that enabled it to manufacture Intel-compatible x86 processors. The relationship became strategically important as IBM’s personal-computer requirements encouraged the availability of multiple x86 suppliers. AMD eventually moved from producing licensed or compatible designs toward developing its own processor architectures. The company’s Athlon processors helped establish AMD as a significant consumer-computing competitor in the late 1990s and early 2000s, while the Opteron family gave it an important presence in servers and 64-bit computing. AMD’s position weakened during parts of the late 2000s and early 2010s, when it faced intense competition, manufacturing burdens, and financial pressure. In 2009, AMD separated its manufacturing operations into GlobalFoundries, making AMD predominantly a fabless chip designer. AMD acquired ATI Technologies in 2006, adding graphics processors and the Radeon brand to its portfolio. It later combined CPU and GPU expertise in accelerated-processing products and supplied semi-custom system-on-chips for major game consoles, including the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One generations. In 2017, the company launched Ryzen desktop and notebook processors and EPYC server processors based on its Zen architecture. These products substantially renewed AMD’s competitiveness in personal computers, workstations, cloud infrastructure, and data centers. The acquisition of Xilinx, completed in 2022, expanded AMD into FPGAs, adaptive computing, embedded products, and industrial applications. AMD’s principal current families include Ryzen for consumer and professional PCs, EPYC for servers, Radeon for graphics, Instinct for data-center and AI acceleration, and Xilinx-derived adaptive and embedded-computing products. The company also develops semi-custom SoCs and embedded processors. AMD generally designs products while relying on external foundries, packaging providers, and manufacturing partners. Its strategic emphasis has increasingly shifted toward data centers, high-performance computing, AI infrastructure, heterogeneous computing, and software ecosystems alongside its established PC and gaming businesses.

History

AMD was incorporated on May 1, 1969, by Jerry Sanders and seven colleagues who had previously worked at Fairchild Semiconductor. The company began in Silicon Valley as a supplier of logic devices, memory products, and other integrated circuits. Its emphasis on quality and military-standard manufacturing helped it win early customers in computing, telecommunications, and instrumentation. AMD went public in 1972 and expanded its proprietary product portfolio during the 1970s. AMD entered microprocessors in 1975 with the Am9080 and developed the Am2900 bit-slice family. Agreements with Intel in the mid-1970s and early 1980s gave AMD rights to manufacture certain compatible products and made it a second-source supplier for Intel’s x86 family. AMD produced versions of the 8086, 8088, 80186, and 80286, while continuing to develop its own logic, memory, and embedded products. After a prolonged legal dispute over access to later Intel processor designs, AMD increasingly had to create its own x86 implementations. Its Am386, introduced in 1991, was an important step toward direct architectural competition. The acquisition of NexGen in 1996 contributed technology used in the K6 processor family. Athlon later became a major consumer processor brand, and Opteron established AMD as an important server competitor through 64-bit x86 technology. However, manufacturing investment, market downturns, and intense rivalry with Intel created substantial pressure in the late 2000s. AMD spun off its manufacturing activities into GlobalFoundries in 2009 and subsequently concentrated on chip design and platform development. AMD acquired ATI Technologies in 2006 for approximately $5.4 billion in cash and stock. The deal added graphics processors, chipsets, and the Radeon business. AMD retired the ATI name for graphics chipsets in 2010, although Radeon remained the principal graphics brand. The company also developed semi-custom SoCs for game consoles and other applications. Its chips were selected for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, giving the company an important source of volume and design wins during a financially difficult period. After management changes and workforce reductions in the early 2010s, AMD reorganized around computing and graphics, enterprise, embedded, and semi-custom activities. Lisa Su became chief executive in 2014. Under her leadership, AMD rebuilt its processor roadmap around the Zen architecture. Ryzen consumer processors and EPYC server processors launched in 2017, followed by successive generations that strengthened AMD’s position in PCs, workstations, cloud infrastructure, and high-performance computing. AMD acquired SeaMicro in 2012, adding low-power server technology, and completed its acquisition of Xilinx in 2022. Xilinx expanded AMD into FPGAs, adaptive SoCs, embedded computing, communications, automotive, industrial, and aerospace-related markets. AMD now operates as a broad semiconductor design company whose portfolio includes CPUs, GPUs, accelerators, FPGAs, embedded processors, and semi-custom systems. Its business strategy increasingly links CPU, GPU, adaptive-computing hardware, and software for data-center, AI, gaming, professional, and embedded workloads.
