Overview

The Angel Free House is a traditional English country pub located in the village of Swanton Morley, Norfolk. It operates as a free house, meaning it is not tied to any particular brewery and can independently select its cask ales. The pub is housed in a Grade II listed building, with its oldest section dating back to 1610. The main bar features low ceilings with original beams decorated with English hops, and a large open fire provides warmth during winter months. The Angel has built a reputation for offering a top-quality selection of fine cask ales and reasonably priced traditional pub food, served every day except Sunday evening. It is one of the few pubs in the area open all day, with opening hours from 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 10pm on Sundays, and is licensed until 1am for special occasions. The pub is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. It is run by Pete and Avril, who welcome visitors. The building's history is notable: the oldest part was originally a 'mansion house' built by Richard Lincoln (1550–1620) in 1610, with a barn (now the pool room) from around the same time. Richard Lincoln's son Edward was disinherited in 1615 and moved to Hingham, Norfolk; Edward's son Samuel later emigrated to America in 1637 and helped found Hingham, Massachusetts. Samuel Lincoln was an ancestor of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. President. The front of the pub was added in the early 1800s and originally contained the bar; today it serves as a separate dining room, while the bar is in the oldest part of the building. The Angel Free House is a local landmark and a popular spot for both locals and visitors seeking a genuine English pub experience.

History

The Angel Free House is a historic pub in Swanton Morley, Norfolk. The oldest part of the building, which now houses the bar and main interior, dates back to 1610 and was originally a 'mansion house' built by Richard Lincoln (1550–1620). A barn from around the same period now serves as the pool room. In 1615, Richard Lincoln altered his will, making his fourth wife and her children the heirs and effectively disinheriting his son Edward (1580–1640). Edward moved to the nearby village of Hingham. Edward's son Samuel was born in 1622 and, living in relative poverty, emigrated to America in 1637 with two of his three brothers. They helped found the town of Hingham in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Samuel Lincoln died in 1690, and 172 years later his great-great-great-great-grandson Abraham Lincoln was born, who became the 16th President of the United States. The front of the pub was added in the early 1800s and contained the original bar when the building first became a public house. Today, that room is a separate dining room, while the bar is located in the oldest part of the building, featuring low original beams decorated with Kentish hops—an unusual sight in Norfolk. The pub has been a free house, independent of brewery ties, and is listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. It is currently run by Pete and Avril, who maintain its reputation for fine cask ales and traditional pub food.
