Overview
Animales Sin Hogar (ASH) is a Uruguayan non-profit civil association founded on 16 November 2003 and composed of volunteers who promote the adoption and responsible ownership of companion animals and the welfare of animals in general. Its main objective is to maintain a national online database of lost, found, and adoptable dogs and cats, as well as to provide support to other animal protection organizations. Although the organization initially focused on the care of domestic animals (650 dogs and 180 cats), in August 2007 it also began to care for an average of 250 horses from the city of Montevideo that had been seized from their owners for mistreatment. By 2010, the organization was providing, through its volunteers, a temporary home service on 180 hectares for many animals, and it is in charge of them for as long as necessary until the adoption process is completed. Its headquarters were at Avenida 18 de Julio 920, and it later moved to Andes 1464 in Montevideo. The organization has carried out various campaigns, such as "Identifica a tu mascota", "Adopta un animal adulto", "Padrinos", and has also promoted peaceful walks in defense of animal rights. It currently works for the dissemination and approval of an Animal Protection Law in its country, since to date animal rights are ignored by current legislation in Uruguay. In November 2013 the organization celebrated its tenth anniversary with an event attended by more than three thousand people, including Fernando Vilar and Julissa Reynoso, among others. In October 2014, Animales Sin Hogar managed from Uruguay the transfer of three lions (one male and two females) from zoos in the interior of the country to a wild animal sanctuary in Denver, United States. In November 2015 Animales Sin Hogar together with Fundación Celeste presented their 2016 solidarity calendar. The calendar features the Uruguayan national football team and combines two passions of Uruguayans: animals and football. The NGO has a 180-hectare space where 10 cows and one bull live. In May 2015, they inaugurated the space located at Avenida 18 de Julio 920, where workshops, adoption days, and sponsorship days are held; the premises has Café ASH. In July 2016, it launched the campaign "Adoptar no es una Moda". Taking part in the campaign are Claudia Fernández, Nano Fole, Martín Inthamoussu, Ximena Torres, and Julieta Rada. In 2017, the organization had about 1,900 animals at its farm. The animals are about 800 dogs, 100 cats, 300 horses, between 500 and 1,000 hens, 20 pigs, some goats and kids, several pigeons that cannot fly, sheep, cows, geese, and a baboon monkey. That same year it went through a crisis at its main property and had to begin reducing its staff from about 30 to 20 employees, so it resorted to a fundraising campaign.
