Overview

Antike Kunst is a Swiss scholarly journal dedicated to classical archaeology. It was founded in 1958 on the initiative of Karl Schefold and Herbert A. Cahn and is published by the Vereinigung der Freunde antiker Kunst (Association of Friends of Ancient Art) in Basel. The journal publishes contributions on the archaeology, art, and culture of antiquity in German, French, Italian, and English. It also features articles and reports from Swiss collections of antiquities and on Swiss excavations abroad. From its first volume through volume 42 (1999), the journal appeared in two issues per year; since 2000 it has been published as a single annual volume. In addition to the journal itself, a series of monographic supplements (Beihefte) has been issued at irregular intervals since 1964, covering topics such as Greek vase painting, sculpture, and excavations. The journal is a specialized academic publication rather than a mass-market title, and it serves the international community of classical archaeologists and art historians.
