Overview

APPLIESE (アプリーズ) is a shopping center integrated into Hirosaki Station in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. It is a station building (ekibiru) directly connected to JR East's Hirosaki Station, located at 2-11 Omote-machi, Hirosaki. The facility opened on April 23, 1982, and has been renovated and expanded in step with the station's redevelopment, notably a major expansion and renewal on March 18, 1989, to mark the 100th anniversary of the city's incorporation, and a further renewal on December 12, 2004, when the fourth-generation Hirosaki Station building entered service. The shopping center spans four floors and houses a mix of retail, food, services, and financial functions. The first floor includes a Matsumoto Kiyoshi drugstore, souvenir and confectionery shops such as Hirosaki Bussan Palsy, Koyama Senbei, Shikanai Senbei, and Wagashi-shi Hiiroya, a Mister Donut, a FamilyMart convenience store, a Lagunoa sweets shop, and a soba restaurant, along with an ATM corner shared by local banks. The second floor offers women's apparel and accessories, a bakery-café, a Doutor Coffee Shop, and a Honey's store. The third floor includes a Can Do 100-yen shop and several apparel and accessory tenants, while the fourth floor houses SUIT SELECT, a clinic, a hair salon, and a Nichii Gakkan training center. APPLIESE functions as a key commercial and service hub for residents and travelers using Hirosaki Station. Its tenant mix has changed over the years, with some shops closing and being replaced, reflecting shifts in the local retail environment. The facility also provides parking for 50 cars, with a free first 30 minutes and a charge of 100 yen per additional 30 minutes. It is operated within the JR East Group, which manages station buildings and commercial facilities across eastern Japan.

History

APPLIESE opened on April 23, 1982, as the station building shopping center attached to Hirosaki Station in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. It was developed to serve the growing commercial needs of the station area and the local community. On March 18, 1989, the facility underwent an expansion and renewal in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Hirosaki's incorporation as a city. This renovation increased the retail floor space and updated the tenant mix. A further major renewal took place on December 12, 2004, coinciding with the start of use of the fourth-generation Hirosaki Station building. This renewal modernized the interior and adjusted the tenant lineup to better meet contemporary shopper expectations. Over the years, APPLIESE has hosted a variety of tenants, some of which have since closed. Past tenants include Nikko Gakki (musical instruments and CDs, 4th floor), Kikuchi Pharmacy (drugstore, 1st floor), Gako Shobo (bookstore, 4th floor, open from spring 2005 until closing on October 15, 2008), Perigord (Western confectionery, 1st floor), Kaimundo (Japanese confectionery, 1st floor), Aoi Hana no Sweet Potato (souvenirs and Western confectionery, 1st floor), Pas a Pas (crepe and café, 2nd floor), Collage (accessories, 2nd floor), Chuo Contact (contact lenses, 3rd floor), Esthe Up (esthetic salon, 4th floor), Oshare Kobo (clothing repair, 4th floor), Green Sled (women's apparel and accessories, 3rd floor), Y!mobile Hirosaki (mobile phone sales), and Sunkus (convenience store, 1st floor, later converted to FamilyMart). Before the 2004 station building renewal, the 4th floor also housed restaurants such as Bikkuri Daio (hamburger steak restaurant) and Kineya (udon restaurant). Until the temporary station building opened in conjunction with the Hirosaki Station building renewal, APPLIESE also had its own dedicated ticket gates. Today, APPLIESE continues to operate as a key commercial facility within the JR East Group, providing shopping, dining, and services to station users and the surrounding community.
