Overview
ASSIOM FOREX (Associazione Operatori dei Mercati Finanziari) is the principal Italian trade association for professionals operating in the financial markets. Based in Milan, it traces its origins to 1957, when it was established as FOREX Club Italia, making it the oldest of Italy's financial associations. Through a series of mergers — with Atic in 2001 and with Assiom in 2009 (the latter itself the product of a merger between Assobat and Aiote) — the organisation took its current name and structure. Today ASSIOM FOREX counts over 1,000 members drawn from banks, investment firms, asset managers, market infrastructure providers and other financial institutions. It serves as a cohesive voice for the Italian financial community, acting as the primary counterpart for the market and supervisory authorities, including the Bank of Italy and CONSOB. The association promotes analysis, study and research on financial market techniques, instruments and issues, and fosters dialogue with monetary and supervisory authorities both nationally and internationally. ASSIOM FOREX organises a wide range of training courses, conferences and events. Its annual Congress is particularly notable as the venue for the first official speech of the year by the Governor of the Bank of Italy. The association also maintains dedicated committees and working groups covering areas such as money markets, capital markets, ALM, regulation, fintech and digitalisation, ESG, equity, and next generation initiatives. It publishes news and updates for members and engages with international bodies, including through the FX Global Code. The association's activities are supported by a network of over 110 lecturers and experts, and it offers a complete and flexible training programme. Its mission is to contribute to the development and integrity of European financial markets by facilitating professional growth, technical dissemination and market best practices.
History
ASSIOM FOREX's history begins in 1957, when it was founded as FOREX Club Italia. It is recognised as the founding organisation among Italian financial associations. Over the following decades, the Italian financial markets evolved rapidly, and the association adapted through a series of mergers that broadened its membership and scope. In 2001, FOREX Club Italia merged with Atic, an association representing financial market operators. This merger strengthened the organisation's representativeness and consolidated its role as a unified voice for the Italian financial community. In 2009, a further merger took place with Assiom, which itself had been formed from the merger of Assobat and Aiote. Following this combination, the organisation adopted the name ASSIOM FOREX (Associazione Operatori dei Mercati Finanziari). As a result of these aggregations, ASSIOM FOREX became the most important and representative financial association in Italy, both nationally and internationally. It grew to over 1,000 members, including professionals from banks, investment firms, asset managers and market infrastructures. The association established itself as the primary counterpart for the market and supervisory authorities, including the Bank of Italy and CONSOB, and as a key participant in the debate on the main issues affecting financial markets. ASSIOM FOREX has also developed a significant educational and convening role. It organises training courses, conferences and events, supported by a network of over 110 lecturers. Its annual Congress is a highlight of the Italian financial calendar, hosting the first official speech of the year by the Governor of the Bank of Italy. The association maintains dedicated committees and working groups on topics such as money markets, capital markets, ALM, regulation, fintech and digitalisation, ESG, equity, and next generation initiatives. It also engages with international bodies and promotes adherence to standards such as the FX Global Code. Today, ASSIOM FOREX continues to promote the analysis, study and research of financial market techniques, tools and issues, to foster relationships with monetary and supervisory authorities, and to strengthen partnerships with national, community and international organisations in order to improve its members' activities and contribute to the development and integrity of European financial markets.
