Overview

Atlantis Grammofon is a Swedish record label. Its history is tied to the Atlantis studio in Stockholm, a space that was originally a movie house called Kadetten on Karlbergsvägen, opened on 5 April 1941, later renamed Terry and closed in 1959, after which it was purchased by Metronome and converted into a recording studio. The record label Alternativ was founded during the 1970s by Janne Hansson after meeting singer Kjell Höglund. After Janne purchased Atlantis Grammofon in 1983, he renamed the label Atlantis Grammafon AB, which releases music only occasionally.

History

The Atlantis studio was originally a movie house called Kadetten on Karlbergsvägen. The 330-seat theater opened on 5 April 1941 and was designed by cinema architect Olle Pettersson. In 1943, Kadetten was purchased by Government film institute Sveriges Folkbiografer and the name was changed to "Terry". The Terry cinema closed its doors in 1959. Shortly thereafter, the space was purchased by Metronome, which tore out all the theater fixtures and converted the space into a temporary recording studio until high-end professional equipment, including a Neve console ordered from England, could be put in place. The Metronome studio was initially run by Anders Burman and Börje Ekberg along with resident sound technician Rune Persson. During the 1970s, the record label Alternativ was founded by Janne Hansson upon meeting the singer Kjell Höglund during his sound engineer education at DI. After Janne purchased Atlantis Grammofon in 1983, he renamed the label Atlantis Grammafon AB. Atlantis Grammafon AB releases music only occasionally.
