Overview

ATN (Agency of Television News, Ukrainian: Агентство Телебачення «Новини») is a Ukrainian television news production company based in Kharkiv. Founded in August 1993 by a group of independent journalists, it is one of the oldest television news agencies in the region. The agency initially produced regional news segments for local TV channels and informational reports for national broadcasters. Over the decades, ATN expanded its output to include daily newscasts, talk shows, and thematic programs, and at times held its own broadcasting license on the 7th TV channel in Kharkiv. The company has weathered political and economic challenges, including a controversial loss of broadcast airtime in 2011 and an office attack in 2014, but has continued to operate, now reaching audiences through its website and YouTube channel. ATN remains a significant source of local news for Kharkiv and the surrounding region.

History

ATN (Agency of Television News) was founded in August 1993 by a group of independent journalists in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Its primary goal was to produce regional news for local channels and informational reports for national channels. From 1993 to 2000, ATN's news aired on the regional television company 'Simon', and from 1995, daily news was also produced for the channel 'Orion'. In 1997, ATN obtained a license for its own broadcasting on the 7th TV channel in Kharkiv, sharing airtime with 'Tonis-Center' (now '7 kanal'). By this time, ATN had transformed into a full-fledged television company, producing daily newscasts, a daily talk show, and numerous weekly information and thematic programs. In 2001, the license expired, and by agreement with the channel's shareholders, ATN news aired on contractual terms. In July 2007, ATN again received a license for six hours of airtime on the 7th channel. Since 2000, ATN has produced daily news and author programs for four Kharkiv TV channels: '7 kanal' (until 2009), 'A/TVK' (since 2009), 'Fora', and 'Favorit-novosti' (closed in 2015), while also broadcasting on the 7th TV channel. In September 2011, channels 'Fora' and 'Favorit' stopped broadcasting ATN News, and the company, along with 'A/TVK' and 'Fora', was deprived of television airtime for political reasons. The official reason was a fabricated sanitary-epidemiological requirement for a sanitary passport for broadcasting. Appeals from human rights organizations and the OSCE to Ukrainian authorities to restore ATN's broadcasting were ignored. For almost four years, ATN continued to produce daily television news, which was posted online and in Crimea (from 2012 to 2013, ATN News aired on the Black Sea TV and Radio Company). Only after the Euromaidan and the flight of former President Viktor Yanukovych, in late February 2014, ATN's television broadcasting was restored. On April 8, 2014, ATN's office was seized by pro-Russian activists, damaging equipment. Serhiy Yudayev, a member of the Kharkiv Anti-Maidan, was convicted for the damage and sentenced to up to 8 years, but was released under amnesty in the courtroom. Today, ATN is the oldest television agency in Kharkiv, producing daily 'ATN News' and the talk show 'Reflection', which air on its own channel and 'A/TVK', which also resumed broadcasting in April 2014. According to sociological research conducted by 'Faktum Group' for the Independent Association of Broadcasters (NAМ) in 2017 in Kharkiv, ATN enjoys absolute trust among Kharkiv residents and ranks first in viewership among local channels (15%). The TV company's office was damaged by a Russian rocket strike on the morning of October 6, 2023.
