Overview
AVEVA is a British industrial software company that builds engineering, operations and data-management software for asset-intensive industries — oil and gas, power and utilities, chemicals, mining and metals, manufacturing, marine and infrastructure. Its tools are used to design, engineer, operate and optimise large physical assets, spanning the whole lifecycle from 3D plant design and engineering data management to real-time operations control, industrial HMI/SCADA, historian and analytics, and supply-chain and value-chain optimisation. The company traces its roots to 1967, when it began as a computer-aided design business serving the process and power industries; it grew into one of the world's best-known plant-design software vendors, with products such as PDMS, E3D, Wonderware, InTouch, System Platform, PI System and, more recently, the AVEVA Connect cloud platform and AVEVA Data Hub. AVEVA has long been a UK-headquartered business, based in Cambridge, and it operated for years as a publicly listed company on the London Stock Exchange. In 2018 Schneider Electric acquired control of AVEVA and combined its own industrial software assets with it; in 2023 Schneider Electric completed a takeover that took AVEVA private, so the brand now operates as a subsidiary within Schneider Electric's industrial-automation and software portfolio. AVEVA sells primarily to large industrial enterprises and engineering contractors, positioning itself around the "digital twin" of industrial assets and the industrial internet of things, and it markets its software on a subscription and cloud-delivered basis alongside traditional perpetual licences.
History
AVEVA's origins lie in 1967, when a small British computer-aided design venture began supplying software to the process and power industries. Over the following decades it became one of the leading vendors of plant-design and engineering software, with its PDMS (Plant Design Management System) and later E3D products widely used by engineering contractors and owner-operators to model complex process plants in three dimensions. The company expanded through acquisitions and product development into operations software as well. Its 2014 combination with the industrial software business of Schneider Electric brought the Wonderware line — InTouch HMI, System Platform and related supervisory and manufacturing-execution products — into the group, broadening AVEVA from engineering design into real-time operations management. A further major step came with the acquisition of the OSIsoft business and its PI System, the widely deployed operations data historian, which anchored AVEVA's position in industrial data management and the industrial internet of things. AVEVA operated as a publicly listed company on the London Stock Exchange for many years. In 2018 Schneider Electric acquired a controlling stake and folded its industrial software assets into AVEVA; in 2023 Schneider Electric completed a full takeover, taking AVEVA private and making it a subsidiary within its industrial automation and software portfolio. The brand continues to serve global industrial customers, increasingly emphasising cloud-delivered software, subscription models and the industrial digital twin.
