Overview

Avnia is a Basque cultural journal (aldizkaria) founded in the Aiaraldea (Ayala) region of the Basque Country, Spain. It was first published in December 2002 and had reached 28 issues by the end of 2009. The name Avnia derives from a Latin inscription found in Laudio (Llodio). The journal is published quarterly, with issues also named after the summer season. Its content centres on ethnography, anthropology, archaeology, history, toponymy and etymology, and the natural environment, always taking the human being as a starting point. Initially focused on the seven municipalities of the Aiaraldea region, over the years it has combined that local attention with texts on other areas. Most articles are in Spanish, with a few in Basque. The project is driven by the Aunia Kultur Elkartea (Aunia Cultural Association), based in Laudio (Aiara), which also organises conferences, excavations and courses on related themes. Avnia is a non-commercial cultural publication rather than a corporate brand, but it operates as a trademarked periodical title within the Basque cultural sphere.

History

Avnia was first published in December 2002 in the Aiaraldea region of the Basque Country. The journal emerged from a local cultural initiative and was driven by the group that later formed the Aunia Kultur Elkartea (Aunia Cultural Association), headquartered in Laudio (Aiara). By the end of 2009, 28 issues had been published. The name Avnia was taken from a Latin inscription discovered in Laudio. Over the years, the journal maintained its focus on the Aiaraldea region while gradually incorporating texts on other areas. It is published quarterly, with issues also named after the summer season. The Aunia Kultur Elkartea has organised conferences on Aiaraldea history and on figures such as Jesus Galindez and Joan Perez de Lazarraga, as well as excavations at the medieval castle of Untzueta and the Barambio cemetery, and has arranged courses. The journal remains a cultural publication rather than a commercial enterprise.
