Overview
Axel Springer SE is a Berlin-based European media and publishing group founded in 1946 by journalist and publisher Axel Springer and his father, Hinrich Springer. It began as a conventional newspaper and magazine publisher, but over several decades developed into a diversified digital media company. Its best-known German brands include Bild, Germany’s major mass-market tabloid, and Die Welt, the group’s flagship quality-news brand. The portfolio also includes magazines, sports and entertainment properties, digital news services, business publications, real-estate and employment marketplaces, price-comparison and affiliate-marketing businesses, and international media brands. The company’s early growth was built around newspapers. It launched Hamburger Abendblatt in 1948, Bild in 1952, and acquired Die Welt in 1953. Subsequent acquisitions brought Ullstein Verlag, Berliner Morgenpost and B.Z. into the group. These transactions helped establish Axel Springer as one of West Germany’s most influential newspaper publishers. The group’s political and editorial positions, especially its strong anti-communist, pro-Western and pro-Israel principles, have also made it a recurring subject of public controversy. Its reporting on the student movement in the 1960s contributed to intense opposition from parts of the West German extra-parliamentary movement. From the 1990s onward, Axel Springer increasingly invested in online publishing and classified advertising. It developed or acquired platforms in property, recruitment, price comparison, affiliate marketing and digital news. Major international transactions included Business Insider in 2015 and Politico in 2021. The company also expanded through joint ventures, including Ringier Axel Springer Polska and Axel Springer Digital Classified with General Atlantic. Its operating portfolio has included Business Insider, Politico, Politico Europe, StepStone, Idealo, Aviv, Awin, Bonial, Upday, Morning Brew, Dyn Media and Transfermarkt, although ownership and portfolio composition have changed over time. KKR became the controlling shareholder in 2020, while Friede Springer transferred a substantial ownership and voting position to Mathias Döpfner. In 2024, Axel Springer and KKR completed a restructuring that separated the media business from the classifieds operations and left the Axel Springer media company privately owned. The resulting group remains focused on journalism, digital subscriptions, advertising, events, newsletters, video, audio and international media brands. Its major businesses serve audiences and advertisers across Europe and North America, while its classified and marketing activities provide technology-driven platforms outside traditional publishing.
History
Axel Springer Verlag was established in 1946 by Axel Springer and his father, Hinrich Springer. The company’s first publications included Nordwestdeutsche Hefte and the radio guide Hörzu. In 1948 it launched Hamburger Abendblatt, its first daily newspaper. Bild followed in 1952, adapting the accessible tabloid model for the German market, and became the group’s largest mass-market title. In 1953 Springer acquired Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag, adding a national newspaper with a more formal editorial profile. The group expanded in the 1950s through investments in Ullstein Verlag, Berliner Morgenpost and B.Z. Its Berlin headquarters became a visible symbol of the company’s presence in West Berlin. During the 1960s, Axel Springer’s newspapers were criticized by student activists for hostile coverage of the student movement and the extra-parliamentary opposition. The attack on student leader Rudi Dutschke in 1968 was followed by violent protests directed at Springer facilities. The controversy contributed to the group’s enduring reputation as a politically assertive publisher. Printing capacity expanded through facilities in Essen-Kettwig, Ahrensburg and Berlin-Spandau. In 1985, 49 percent of the company was offered to the public in an initial public offering. Axel Springer died later that year, and control passed to his widow, Friede Springer. The company subsequently broadened its international licensing activity, including editions of Auto Bild and other magazines. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the group entered television production, online publishing and digital classifieds. In 2001 it formed a joint subsidiary with T-Online around Bild.de. Mathias Döpfner, previously editor-in-chief of Die Welt, became chief executive in 2002. The company adopted the name Axel Springer AG in 2003. Its digital expansion accelerated through acquisitions including StepStone, Zanox, Digital Window, Immonet, TotalJobs, Idealo and other online services. A strategic shift toward digital platforms and international growth led to several major disposals and acquisitions. In 2013 the company sold its regional newspapers, women’s magazines and television magazines to Funke Mediengruppe, while also selling a French magazine business to Reworld Media. It acquired N24 and integrated the broadcaster with Die Welt’s news operation. Business Insider became part of the group in 2015, and Morning Brew was acquired with Insider in 2020. Politico was acquired in 2021 for more than one billion euros, expanding Axel Springer’s presence in American and European political journalism. The ownership structure changed substantially in 2020 when KKR became the majority investor and Friede Springer transferred a major stake and voting rights to Döpfner. The company continued investing in digital journalism, subscriptions, newsletters, video and marketplace technology. In 2024, the media assets and classifieds activities were separated in a transaction involving KKR. Axel Springer thereafter operated as a privately owned media company rather than the earlier publicly traded structure. Its present identity is centered on international digital journalism and related media services, supported by brands such as Bild, WELT, Business Insider and Politico.
