Overview

AxFlow is a Sweden-origin group that belongs to the Axel Johnson Group and has evolved into a leading European specialist in fluid handling. It is an application- and service-driven niche company that sources market-leading fluid handling equipment — pumps, mixers, valves, heat exchangers, instruments and complete pumping systems — and adds value through product selection, system design and construction, and local service. The company describes itself as "a leading source of pumps, mixers, valves, heat exchangers, instruments, complete pumping systems and fluid handling expertise for the process industry." Rather than a manufacturer, AxFlow is primarily a distributor and systems integrator. It represents leading global manufacturers such as Waukesha, APV, Bran+Luebbe, Sandpiper, Viking Pump, NOV Mono, Lowara and Grundfos, and its value proposition is application expertise: understanding what exactly is being pumped, how abrasive, corrosive or viscous the fluid is, and what hygiene, safety or temperature-control considerations apply. It then recommends and integrates the right solution, ensuring upstream and downstream compatibility across critical control points in a production line. AxFlow operates across Europe and beyond, with a country selector listing Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Its product catalogue spans pumps, heat exchangers, homogenizers, flow instruments, mixers and agitators, open plant cleaning and valves, with hundreds of series from dozens of manufacturers, serving market segments from food and beverage, dairy, brewing, pharmaceutical and chemical to water treatment, marine, mining, power generation and oil and gas. The group traces its origins to 1989, when Axel Johnson Flow AB was created to coordinate and support the activities of about a dozen companies within the Axel Johnson group. Through organic growth, strategic mergers and acquisitions, and divestment of non-strategic activities, it grew into a pan-European fluid handling group. It was renamed AxTrade Flow AB in 1991 and AxFlow AB in 1994, and in July 2000 became AxFlow Holding AB, with group companies renamed accordingly. AxFlow is headquartered in Sweden and remains part of the Axel Johnson Group. It continues to expand, for example through the acquisition of Thornhill Australia by AxFlow Oceania, bringing together over 30 years of plate heat exchanger expertise with AxFlow's broader flow technology offering.

History

AxFlow's history begins in 1989, when Axel Johnson Flow AB was created to coordinate and support the activities of about a dozen companies within the Axel Johnson group. These included George Meller and Bernhard M. Bergman AB. Curt Källström was President and CEO. In 1990, Al-Techniek Benelux, with offices in the Netherlands and Belgium, was acquired and merged into Axel-Johnson Industrial. Volumax was founded in France, and Wemex was transferred to a sister company, AxEast Asia. In Portugal, the "Flow" division of Axel Johnson Lda became a separate specialized company called Vendor. In 1991, AxFlow acquired Apliventil (Portugal), Gaflo (Germany) and Maskin AB AXAB (Sweden). The latter merged with Bernhard M. Bergman AB to become AB Bergman-AXAB. Axel Johnson Flow AB was renamed AxTrade Flow AB. In 1992, a subsidiary, Flowmax, was created in Spain. In 1994, AxTrade Flow AB was again renamed, this time to AxFlow AB. Several non-strategic subsidiaries in Belgium, France and Germany were divested. In 1995, AxFlow acquired Alpha-Technical in the United Kingdom and merged it with Meller. It acquired AKA Pump in Sweden and merged it with Bergman-AXAB. In Poland, a Pumps division was created with sister company AxEast. In the Netherlands, Al Techniek's technical installations were developed. Axel Johnson Hellas in Greece was divested. In 1996, Gregersen & Johnson in Norway was acquired by AxEast. Two other Norwegian companies, Norsk Pumpeindustri and Maskin K Lund, were acquired and merged. In Spain, the Pumps division of MOPINSA merged with Flowmax. In 1997, AxFlow acquired the Pumps department of NESSCO (Norway) and DCM (Belgium), as well as Hillman Oy in Finland. In the same year, PROMAX was created in the Czech Republic. In 1998, STB Pompy (Poland) and DANAX (Denmark) were created. Norsk Pumpe merged with Gregersen & Johnson. In Denmark, Axel Johnson Teknik was divested. In Sweden, Svenska Tätningar was acquired and merged with Bergman-AXAB. Meller acquired Rogan Raydel (United Kingdom) and the Tank & Silo department of IMS (Netherlands), forming Meller FlowTrans. In 1999, in Denmark, Danax acquired the Fluids business of Berendsen PMC (Sophus Berendsen A/S). In Hungary, AxFlow acquired Bajck Kft. A new AxFlow company was also created in Ireland. In 2000, in July, AxFlow AB became AxFlow Holding AB. All companies in the AxFlow group were then renamed. In the United Kingdom, George Meller Ltd restructured, creating three specialized companies: AxFlow Ltd, Meller Process Equipment Ltd and Meller FlowTrans Ltd. AxFlow Norway acquired the packaging company Metro in Oslo. In 2001, in February, AxFlow created a subsidiary in Switzerland in Schönenwerd. AxFlow was now present throughout Europe. In December 2003, AxFlow Holding announced the acquisition of the SPX Process Equipment group in the Netherlands, France, Spain and Italy. AxFlow became the exclusive distributor of the SPX brand. In February 2004, AxFlow SAS (Montlouis-sur-Loire) and Bran & Luebbe merged. In December 2009, the Montlouis-sur-Loire site closed and AxFlow moved to Notre-Dame-d'Oé. In July 2011, an agency opened in Mions near Lyon. In January 2018, AxFlow acquired RDC Productions, increasing its service capabilities. More recently, AxFlow Oceania acquired Thornhill Australia, bringing together over 30 years of plate heat exchanger expertise and strong local service capabilities with AxFlow's broader flow technology offering.
