Overview
Bandworm Records is a German independent record label and mail-order business founded in 1995 and based in Magdeburg. It releases and distributes sound and image recordings, primarily in the fields of punk rock and Oi!, but also ska, reggae, hardcore punk, rock, psychobilly, rockabilly and rock 'n' roll. The label also operates a sub-label, Asphalt Records, and its catalogue includes a book, Punkrock Tattoos – Hautkunst aus der Messestadt. Although its musical range is broad, the focus from the outset was on Oi! punk, because the founders themselves came from that scene. Early releases included bands such as Falsche Fögel (punk from Magdeburg), Restrisiko (Oi punk from Magdeburg) and Tetra Vinyl (punk from Wefensleben). Over the years the label has been associated with controversy: the band Kampfzone, whose first single with songs from their early phase was released by the label, increasingly acquired a reputation for being close to the right-wing scene, and Perkele were also often accused of being a right-wing band. By contrast, bands such as Red Union (Serbia) and Subversivos (Brazil) are close to the left-wing scene. In 2005 the second album of the Saarland skinhead band KrawallBrüder was released on vinyl by the label. The mail-order side of the business has increasingly come to include music from the (apolitical) skinhead scene, rock 'n' roll, hardcore punk, ska, rock and psychobilly. After the band Frei.Wild, which released via Asphalt Records, wanted to play a concert for the South Tyrolean party Die Freiheitlichen, the label ended further cooperation, even though the band distanced itself under pressure from its management and cancelled the event.
