Overview
Baumit GmbH is a German producer of building materials and system solutions for facade, wall, floor and renovation applications. Its roots go back to 1902, when the company was founded as a producer of building lime under the name Bayosan. Over the twentieth century it expanded into dry mortars and renovation plasters, and in 2003 it was taken over by the Austrian Schmid Industrie Holding. In 2004 it was merged with the Baumit business of Wopfinger Baustoffindustrie to form BaumitBayosan GmbH & Co. KG, and in 2009 it was fully integrated into Baumit International and renamed Baumit GmbH. The company is headquartered in Bad Hindelang in the Allgäu region of southern Germany and operates numerous production sites across Germany, including Biblis, Alheim-Heinebach, Landsberg am Lech, Oer-Erkenschwick, Laußnitz/Ottendorf-Okrilla, Remseck-Aldingen, Schönbach, Grabow, Wittenborn and Elin Pelin. Its customers include building-material dealers, contractors, stucco workers, painters, architects and planners, as well as housing companies. Baumit's product range covers colour, insulation, plaster, renovation and floor systems. The German company is part of the international Baumit Group within Schmid Industrie Holding, which is represented in 21 countries and employs around 3,620 people. In Germany, Baumit has around 780 employees at 14 locations. The brand is positioned as a provider of complete system solutions for modern new-build and renovation projects, supported by technical expertise, service and practical advice. Baumit has also been recognised for its work in heritage conservation, receiving a gold medal in 2002 for outstanding achievement in monument preservation and for the development of special building materials for heritage conservation in Europe.
History
The company was founded in 1902 as a producer of building lime under the name Bayosan. From 1968 it also began producing dry mortar. In 1981, responding to growing demand in the old-building renovation sector, it introduced a renovation plaster (Sanierputz) system. In 1988 the entire company was acquired by a majority by the Wietersdorfer Group and Schmid Industrie Holding, restructured and renamed BAYOSAN Wachter GmbH & Co KG. In 2000, the production sites in Aldingen and Biblis were taken over 50% by the civil engineering company Karl Epple, and a production facility in Taucha was taken over 100%, and these were converted into BAYOSAN Epple Mörtel- und Putzsysteme GmbH & Co. KG. On 1 January 2003, Bayosan was fully acquired by the Austrian Baumit, and on 1 January 2004 it was merged with the Baumit business area of Wopfinger Baustoffindustrie to form BaumitBayosan GmbH & Co. KG. The company operated a further 8 production sites in Germany. This subsidiary was dissolved on 31 May 2009 and fully integrated into Baumit International as of 1 June 2009, and renamed Baumit GmbH. In 2006 the company achieved sales of about 105 million euros with 350 employees; in 2009 it was around 130 million euros with around 450 employees; and by 2018 it had reached 183 million euros with around 560 employees. Its customers include building-material dealers, building contractors, stucco workers, painters and planners. In 2002 the company was honoured with the gold medal for outstanding achievement in monument preservation and for the development of special building materials for heritage conservation in Europe.
