Overview
Bay 2 is a shopping centre located in Collégien, in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Île-de-France region, France. It opened on 19 February 2003 and is operated by Carmila, the listed shopping-centre company backed by Carrefour. The centre is anchored by a Carrefour hypermarket and houses 110 shops. It was conceived as a complement to the nearby Bay 1 centre, following a decision to relocate the Carrefour shopping centre from Torcy, whose site was poorly served and too small, with only 16,000 m² of sales area. Construction took place on a former wheat field under an agreement signed between the developer and the Seine-et-Marne federation of building and public works. The centre has a distinctive aeroplane-wing structure with 600 metres of façade. At opening it covered 68,000 m²; today it has 110 shops over a total area of 21,377 m², with 14,858 m² of sales area and a 4,000-space car park. It is located at the intersection of the A4 and A104 motorways and is served by an Île-de-France regional express rail station. In 2017 the catchment area stretched between Claye-Souilly, Nanteuil-lès-Meaux, Ozoir-la-Ferrière and Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, with customers from the latter coming from the west via the A4. Four out of five employees come from the centre's local area, for example from Bussy-Saint-Martin or Torcy. Carmila acquired the entire shopping centre in 2015. In 2017 the centre received seven million visitors a year; Carmila now reports annual footfall reduced to six million. In 2017, turnover excluding the hypermarket was €100 million per year, with 20–30% of that generated during the year-end holiday period; on 23 November 2017 alone the centre welcomed more than 40,000 visitors. In 2017 the centre accounted for 1,400 jobs, 400 of them at Carrefour alone. Among the brands present, besides Carrefour, are Basic-Fit, Darty, Leroy Merlin, Normal and Sephora. Burger King has been present since 2016; the Bay 2 restaurant was the chain's twenty-fifth in Île-de-France. At launch, Burton, Virgin and H&M were also present. A 300 m² dental centre opened at Bay 2 in January 2022. Closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, Bay 2 welcomed six new brands upon reopening, and a few months later a temporary vaccination centre was set up there.
