Overview

Behr Bircher Cellpack BBC AG, also known as BBC Group, is a Swiss industrial conglomerate headquartered in Villmergen. The group operates through subsidiaries in sensor technology, packaging technology, plastics technology, engineering and control technology, as well as cable accessories for energy connection systems and control systems for power distribution. It employs 1,274 people and generated revenue of 330 million Swiss francs in 2008. The company is owned by Swiss entrepreneur Giorgio Behr through Behr Deflandre & Snozzi BDS AG. The group is organized into seven business areas and has production and sales companies in Europe, Asia, and South America. Its business units include BBC Cellpack Electrical Products, which produces cable accessories for low- and medium-voltage power distribution; BBC Cellpack Power Systems, focused on energy distribution technology including transformer stations, medium-voltage switchgear, low-voltage distribution systems, and cable distribution cabinets; BBC Cellpack Technology, which manufactures precision parts and assemblies and offers services for medical devices including cleaning and sterile packaging in cleanrooms; BBC Cellpack Packaging, specializing in plastic films, food packaging, and plastic bags; BBC Bircher Smart Access, covering sensor technology with touch and motion switches; and BBC Bircher Automation, active in industrial control technology and control systems for machines and plants. The current group was formed in two steps. In 1991, Giorgio Behr was commissioned to restructure the Beringen-based apparatus manufacturer Bircher. Behr had specialized in restructuring companies in the 1980s and founded his own consulting firm in 1984. When no buyer could be found for Bircher, Behr, together with Anton Bucher-Bechtler and management, took over the company, which was threatened with bankruptcy. In 2001, Behr acquired a majority stake in the Cellpack Group, founded in 1935 and based in Villmergen, and in 2003 integrated it with the Bircher Group into the newly formed Behr Bircher Cellpack BBC group. From 2008, Behr Bircher Cellpack BBC launched several takeover offers, some of which met with fierce opposition from the targeted companies. While the acquisition of Groupe Baumgartner Holding, in which Behr Bircher Cellpack BBC held more than 90 percent since June 2008, succeeded despite the target's opposition, attempts to acquire sia Abrasives and Quadrant failed.

In 2001, Behr acquired a majority stake in the Cellpack Group, founded in 1935 and based in Villmergen, and in 2003 integrated it together with the Bircher Group into the newly formed Behr Bircher Cellpack BBC group.
