Overview
BelTIZ (Belarusian: БелТІЗ, short for Беларускае таварыства інвалідаў па зроку, 'Belarusian Society of the Visually Impaired') is one of Belarus's oldest voluntary mass public organizations. Founded in 1924, it is dedicated to the socialization and support of people with visual impairments. Beyond its advocacy and social mission, BelTIZ operates as a commercial entity: it owns 14 unitary enterprises that employ over 7,000 people, predominantly individuals with visual impairments. These enterprises produce a range of goods and services, making BelTIZ both a social organization and a significant economic actor in Belarus. The organization is headquartered in Minsk and maintains a national presence across the country.
History
The Belarusian Society of the Visually Impaired (BelTIZ) was established on 23 November 1924, when an organizational meeting was held in the premises of the Minsk School for People with Visual Impairments. From its inception, the organization aimed to unite and support people with visual impairments across Belarus. Over the decades, BelTIZ grew into a mass voluntary organization and one of the oldest associations in the country. Today it unites nearly 14,000 members. It owns 14 unitary enterprises that employ more than 7,000 people, predominantly individuals with visual impairments. These enterprises engage in various commercial activities, providing employment and economic independence for the visually impaired. BelTIZ continues to focus on its main task: the socialization of people with visual impairments.
