Overview
Bensey Publishing (勉誠出版, Bensei Shuppan) is a Japanese academic publisher founded in 1967. For over five decades it has been known for publishing scholarly works in the humanities, particularly literature, current affairs, and social issues. Its catalog includes encyclopedias and dictionaries such as the 'World Children's and Young Adult Literature Information Encyclopedia,' the 'Miyazawa Kenji Encyclopedia,' the 'Dazai Osamu Encyclopedia,' the 'Sugawara no Michizane Encyclopedia,' as well as research monographs and general-interest books. In the fields of current affairs and social problems, it has published works that offer perspectives differing from conventional views, such as 'The Quiet Revolution in Mental Health Care: The Light and Shadow of Psychotropic Drugs,' 'Library Management Theory,' and 'Japanese People in the Era of Globalization.' A notable long-running series is 'Ajia Yūgaku' (Asian Studies), which began in February 1999 with the volume 'Cross-border Xinjiang and Uyghur' edited by Shinnen Yasushi, and by 2019 had continued past issue 242, establishing itself as a unique collection of essays on Asian culture, history, and society. In April 2004, the quarterly magazine 'GYROS' was launched (now discontinued). In 2015, the company received the 12th 'Shuppan Azusa-kai Newspaper Cultural Award.' In 2021, as the owner aged and closure was considered, Yoshida Yusuke, who had been editorial department manager at Bensei Shuppan, founded Bensei-sha Co., Ltd. and took over all operations. The staff of Bensei Shuppan transferred to Bensei-sha, and from 2023 all operations are conducted under Bensei-sha, while backlist titles from Bensei Shuppan continue to be handled. The company's philosophy includes 'living positively based on the principle of immutable and changing,' and 'sincerity toward people, work, society, and the world.'
