Overview

Bentley is a British luxury automobile brand and manufacturer headquartered in Crewe, England. Its vehicles combine high performance, extensive hand-finishing, premium materials and long-distance touring capability. The marque was established by engineer Walter Owen Bentley in 1919, initially with the ambition of building fast, durable cars rather than conventional luxury automobiles. Its early reputation was created through competition, particularly at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Bentley cars won in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930. The racing successes, together with the publicity generated by wealthy privateer drivers known as the Bentley Boys, made the winged-B marque strongly associated with speed, endurance and sporting prestige. The company’s early history was financially unstable. Woolf Barnato, a wealthy financier and racing driver, rescued and controlled Bentley Motors during the second half of the 1920s. The business expanded its range from the original 3 Litre to larger and more powerful models, including the 6½ Litre, 4½ Litre, Speed Six and 8 Litre. The supercharged Blower Bentley became an enduring symbol of the period, although its racing reliability was less consistent than its fame suggests. Bentley also became associated with Barnato’s celebrated 1930 road race against the Blue Train from the French Riviera to London. The Great Depression undermined demand for expensive motor cars. Bentley entered receivership in 1931 and was acquired through a transaction ultimately controlled by Rolls-Royce. Production moved first to Derby and later to Crewe, where a factory originally built for wartime aero-engine production became the long-term home of the brand. Under Rolls-Royce ownership, Bentley cars shared substantial engineering with Rolls-Royce models and were positioned as the sportier, more driver-focused alternative within the same luxury portfolio. This period produced models such as the 3½ Litre, 4¼ Litre, Mark V, R Type Continental, S1 Continental, T Series, Mulsanne and Turbo R. Rolls-Royce Motors was separated from the aerospace business in the 1970s and later acquired by Vickers. In 1998, Vickers sold the automotive group to Volkswagen AG. Volkswagen acquired Bentley and its automotive assets, while the Rolls-Royce name and related rights were transferred separately to BMW. Volkswagen invested substantially in Crewe, product development and manufacturing, enabling Bentley to develop a distinct modern range rather than remaining primarily a derivative of Rolls-Royce products. The modern Bentley portfolio is built around three principal lines: the Continental GT grand tourer, the Flying Spur luxury performance sedan and the Bentayga luxury SUV. The Continental GT, introduced in the early 2000s, broadened the brand’s international reach and became a central volume and image product. The Bentayga, launched in the mid-2010s, extended Bentley into the rapidly growing high-luxury SUV segment. Mulliner, Bentley’s personalization and coachbuilding division, provides bespoke design, materials and limited-production commissions for customers seeking a more individual vehicle. Bentley operates internationally, with major markets in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia. China became an important market during Bentley’s global expansion. Most vehicles are assembled at Crewe, while selected bodies and components have historically been produced elsewhere within the Volkswagen Group manufacturing network. Since 2022, Bentley has been consolidated under Audi within Volkswagen Group’s premium-brand structure. The company has also announced a long-term transition toward electrified vehicles, including hybrid products and an intended fully electric future, while retaining its emphasis on craftsmanship, performance and personalization.

History

Bentley Motors was founded in London in 1919 by W. O. Bentley, who sought to build powerful and dependable cars. His earlier experience selling DFP automobiles and developing lightweight aluminum pistons for aero engines influenced the company’s engineering approach. Bentley displayed a prototype chassis at the 1919 Olympia Motor Show and began customer production with the 3 Litre, although development delays postponed deliveries until 1921. Early cars quickly established a reputation in hill climbs, Brooklands competition and endurance racing. The marque’s decisive breakthrough came at Le Mans. A Bentley entered by John Duff and Frank Clement won in 1924, and further victories followed in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930. The company’s racing identity was reinforced by the Bentley Boys, a group of wealthy enthusiasts and drivers that included Woolf Barnato, Tim Birkin, Glen Kidston, Sammy Davis, Dudley Benjafield and George Duller. Their participation connected the brand with sporting glamour as well as engineering durability. Barnato also provided essential financial support. Through his investment vehicle, he recapitalized Bentley in 1926 and became its controlling shareholder and chairman. Bentley expanded its road-car range during the 1920s. Larger six-cylinder models addressed customers who fitted increasingly heavy bodies, while the 4½ Litre and Speed Six became important competition cars. Birkin’s supercharged Blower Bentley was created outside the company’s preferred engineering program and became famous despite limited racing success. In 1930 Barnato’s Speed Six won a wagered race from Cannes to London against the Blue Train, creating one of the marque’s most persistent legends. The economic crisis that followed the 1929 Wall Street crash reduced demand for Bentley’s expensive automobiles. The company could not meet mortgage obligations and entered receivership in July 1931. Rolls-Royce acquired the business through a seemingly independent purchasing entity and established Bentley Motors (1931) as a subsidiary. Production moved to Rolls-Royce facilities in Derby, where Bentley returned in 1933 with the 3½ Litre, a sportier counterpart to the contemporary Rolls-Royce. The brand later moved to Crewe, a factory constructed during the Second World War for Merlin aero-engine production. Crewe became Bentley’s principal manufacturing base after Rolls-Royce’s motor-car operations were concentrated there. For much of the post-war period, Bentley models used shared Rolls-Royce engineering, although Bentley versions generally emphasized performance and driver involvement. Notable cars included the R Type Continental, S Type Continental, T Series, Mulsanne and Turbo R. Rolls-Royce Motors was separated from the nationalized aerospace business in 1971 and sold to Vickers in 1980. In 1998, Vickers sold the automotive operation to Volkswagen AG. The transaction separated Bentley from Rolls-Royce as corporate brands: Volkswagen retained Bentley and the Crewe operation, while BMW obtained the Rolls-Royce marque for a separate future automobile business. Volkswagen investment transformed Bentley. The Continental GT, launched in the early 2000s, brought modern mass-production capability, all-wheel drive and grand-touring performance to a broader international customer base. The Flying Spur developed the sedan side of the range, while the Bentayga, introduced in 2015, brought the brand into luxury SUVs. Mulliner expanded the role of bespoke commissioning, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing. In the 2020s, Bentley has focused on electrification, sustainability and personalization. Hybrid versions have provided an initial step toward reduced-emission luxury performance, while the company’s long-term strategy targets a fully electric portfolio. Bentley remains a Volkswagen Group brand, with Audi responsible for its organizational consolidation since 2022, and continues to produce the majority of its vehicles at Crewe.
