Overview

Bernhardt is a luxury heritage furniture brand with a history spanning over 135 years. Founded in 1889 by John Mathias Bernhardt, the company is headquartered in Lenoir, NC, and is described as the country's largest family-owned furniture company and a leading global furniture manufacturer. Its product range covers bedroom, dining, living, workspace and outdoor furniture, and its furnishings can be found in homes, hotels, offices, universities and other fine properties worldwide.

History

Bernhardt's story began over 135 years ago. In 1860 the Bernhardt family moved to the western NC town of Lenoir with their young son, John Mathias, who was orphaned at 13. In 1889 John Mathias returned to Lenoir to work in the timber and sawmill trade and, after years of experience in the industry, started his own company making bedroom furniture out of the region's native white oak. In 1914, despite labor and materials shortages caused by World War I, the company expanded its product line and continued delivery of its furniture orders. In 1920 John Mathias' son George returned from service in the war as a U.S. Naval officer and took over operations. In 1926 a catastrophic fire nearly destroyed the entire company, burning everything except the factory's dry kiln and boiler room; George rebuilt and Bernhardt opened a new plant in 1927. The company is now led by the family's 4th generation and has grown into the country's largest family-owned furniture company and a leading global furniture manufacturer, with eight manufacturing facilities in North Carolina, six offices overseas and sales representatives in 50 countries.
