Overview

Bethmann Bank (Bethmann HAL) is a German private bank whose roots reach back to the 18th century: on 2 January 1748, Simon Moritz Bethmann joined his brother's trading house in Frankfurt, laying the basis for Bankhaus Bethmann. It describes itself as a private bank for all wealth decisions, serving wealthy private clients and entrepreneurs as well as institutional clients, corporate clients, foundations and non-profit organisations, and external asset managers and family offices. As part of the ABN AMRO group, it says it offers access to a broad spectrum of resources and expertise, and states that it has accompanied wealth through every generation for over 300 years. Its stated mission is to enable good decisions — tailored and personal, today and tomorrow — and it positions itself as the personal bank and first choice in wealth management.

History

The roots of Bethmann HAL reach back to the 18th century. On 2 January 1748, Simon Moritz Bethmann joined his brother's trading house in Frankfurt, laying the basis for Bankhaus Bethmann. Also in Frankfurt, Friedrich Michael Hauck became a partner in Platz & Gebhard (since 1753), later Gebhard & Hauck, in 1796; initially only incidentally in the banking business, the house granted a loan of 100,000 gulden to the Oberrheinischer Kreis in 1800. Significant figures trusted the Bethmann Bank with their money, including Empress Maria Theresa, Tsar Alexander I and Pope Pius VI; Goethe also used the bank, his famous Italian journey made possible by a credit. In 1857 Adalbert Delbrück and Heinrich Leo founded Delbrück Leo & Co. in Berlin, today part of Bethmann Bank, and early supported innovative companies of their time, among them later industrial giants such as Siemens and Krupp. After Georg Hauck's death, his son Alexander took over the family bank and was appointed to the supervisory board of Farbwerke Hoechst, which developed into an international chemicals group. The bank states that it has accompanied wealth through every generation for over 300 years, and today it is part of the ABN AMRO group.
