Overview

Bigg Boss was a Czech independent music label, book publisher, and clothing brand focused on hip hop and related urban culture. It emerged from the earlier label Terrorist?, which was run by Vladimir 518 and Orion from the late 1990s and released the East Side Unia compilations. In 2006, Terrorist? was transformed into the official Bigg Boss label by musician and artist Vladimir 518, DJ Mike Trafik, and Aleš Víšek. The label represented artists such as PSH, Orion, Vladimir 518, James Cole, Hugo Toxxx, LA4, Maniak, DJ Mike Trafik, Hentai Corporation, The Atavists, WWW, Lazer Viking, and others. Beyond music, Bigg Boss operated a book publishing arm specializing in contemporary and historical Czech photography, art biographies, and architecture, and it created a clothing brand and shop called Merch or Die in collaboration with the graphic and screen-printing studio Print 44. It also published the online magazine Bigg Magg. The label's YouTube channel had over 122,000 subscribers by May 2021. In 2021, Vladimir 518 announced the end of the label, which ceased operations at the end of that year. Bigg Boss artists received several Anděl music awards, including Vladimir 518's Gorila vs Architekt in 2008 and Idiot in 2014, and Smack's Sick in 2015. The label's book trilogy Kmeny became a bestseller and inspired a television series, an exhibition, and a theatre play.

History

Bigg Boss originated from the label Terrorist?, which was operated by Vladimir 518 and Orion from the late 1990s. Terrorist? began with the release of the international compilations East Side Unia (1998) and East Side Unia Vol. 2 (2000), which brought together hip hop musicians from Eastern Europe. According to Vladimir, the motivation was that they "wanted to get to know foreign bands as well, and domestic bands were not yet ready to release a full-length album." Subsequently, the label released the first albums by PSH (Repertoár and Rap'N'Roll), P.H.A.T. (later James Cole) with Frekvence P.H.A.T., Orion's Teritorium 1 and Teritorium 2, and the continuation of the compilation East Side Unia vol. 3. In 2006, Terrorist? was transformed into the official Bigg Boss label. The founding of Bigg Boss in 2006 was driven by musician and artist Vladimir 518, DJ Mike Trafik, and Aleš Víšek. The label's YouTube channel had over 122,000 subscribers by May 2021. In 2021, Vladimir 518 announced the end of the label, which ceased operations at the end of that year. In terms of music, Bigg Boss represented artists not only from hip hop but also from other genres. In collaboration with the graphic and screen-printing studio Print 44, the label created its own clothing brand and shop Merch or Die. Several Bigg Boss artists were awarded in music competitions including the Czech Anděl music awards. In book publishing, Bigg Boss focused on projects in contemporary and historical domestic photography, artistic biographies of Czech artists (e.g., David Černý, Lubomír Typlt, Krištof Kintera), architecture, and other topics. Based on the published book trilogy Kmeny about Prague subcultures of the 1970s and 1980s, which became a book bestseller, a television series of the same name was filmed, an exhibition was held at the Brno Museum of Applied Arts, and a theatre performance was staged. Kmeny 90 was described by criticism in Hospodářské noviny as "authorially uneven," while another review in the daily E15 called the book "an extraordinary book" and "required reading for all generations."
