Overview

Biopalatset is a multiplex cinema located at Kungstorget in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was inaugurated on 15 September 1995 and was the third of four 'biopalats' (cinema palaces) built in Sweden by Sandrew Metronome AB; the other three are in Stockholm, Malmö and Borlänge. The cinema occupies a 1980s galleria across three floors and originally had 1,350 seats; today it has 10 auditoriums and 1,143 seats. The building was designed by the architectural firm Semrén & Månsson, with interiors by Rutger Andersson. A section of a 17th-century bastion wall has been preserved on the ground floor for public viewing. Five of the auditoriums are THX-certified. Ownership has changed over time: after Sandrew Metronome, the cinema was owned by Astoria Cinemas and is now owned by Filmstaden (formerly SF Bio). It remains an active first-run cinema in central Gothenburg.
