Black Sheep Brewery was established in 1992 by Paul, who left the Theakston family business and built his own brewery in Masham's former Maltings using salvaged equipment from closed breweries. The first brew of Best Bitter was on 14th September 1992. The brewery's name reflects Paul being seen as a black sheep for leaving the family business. Over the following 34 years, Black Sheep has bridged traditional cask ales and innovative craft beers, producing award-winning stouts, pale and blonde ales, and modern hoppy IPAs. The original brewhouse is still in use today, and the brewery operates a visitor centre with tours, a Bar & Kitchen, and the Sheepy Shop in Masham, Yorkshire.
