History

Block originated in 2009 after an unsuccessful attempt by Jim McKelvey to accept payment for a high-value glass sale exposed the difficulty small merchants faced when taking credit cards. McKelvey and Jack Dorsey responded by developing a small card reader and a supporting software platform. The product, initially known as Square, made it possible for sellers to accept card payments using mobile devices and gradually became a point-of-sale system rather than merely a payment accessory. Square broadened its merchant proposition with software for sales reporting, inventory, customer management, appointments, online stores, payroll, marketing, business banking, and working-capital products. It also expanded geographically, serving merchants in markets including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and other European countries. Acquisitions such as Caviar, Weebly, Stitch Labs, and Eloquent Labs added food delivery, website creation, inventory management, and communications capabilities. Some acquired products were later integrated, sold, or repositioned within the wider platform. The company entered consumer payments with Square Cash in 2013. The service, later branded Cash App, developed into a mobile wallet and financial-services platform. Its functions expanded to include peer-to-peer transfers, a debit card, savings features, stock investing, Bitcoin activity, borrowing, and tax filing in applicable jurisdictions. This gave Block a consumer network alongside its established seller network and enabled the company to connect commerce, payments, and financial services across both sides of a transaction. Square completed its initial public offering in November 2015, with its shares trading on the New York Stock Exchange under SQ. After listing, the company continued investing in seller software, banking, lending, and consumer products. It acquired or developed additional capabilities, including investment infrastructure and tax-preparation technology. In 2021, it bought a majority stake in TIDAL, the music-streaming platform associated with Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z. In December 2021, Square, Inc. became Block, Inc. The new corporate identity reflected the company’s expansion into Cash App, music, financial services, blockchain research, and Bitcoin-related projects. Square remained the merchant business name. Block subsequently completed its acquisition of Afterpay on January 31, 2022. Afterpay’s installment-payment model expanded the group’s consumer-credit and merchant-conversion capabilities, with the service operating under the Clearpay name in some European markets. Block’s later portfolio included Bitkey, a hardware and software wallet designed for self-custody of Bitcoin, and Proto, a Bitcoin-mining system and related infrastructure initiative. Its seller organization continued to market an integrated commerce stack, while Cash App developed new products and advertising opportunities around its consumer audience. The group also maintained a significant focus on Bitcoin and decentralized financial technology, while remaining principally a diversified payments and financial-services company. Today, Block is best understood as a multi-brand fintech group. Square serves sellers with payment acceptance and commerce management; Cash App serves consumers; Afterpay provides installment payments; TIDAL operates in music streaming; and Bitkey and Proto address Bitcoin-related hardware and infrastructure. The company’s history is marked by a repeated shift from a narrowly defined payment tool toward interconnected platforms for commerce, personal finance, and digital assets.
