Overview
Bluechip Computer AG, stylized as bluechip, is a German computer manufacturer headquartered in Meuselwitz, Thuringia. Founded in 1992 by Hubert Wolf as bluechip Computer Großhandelsgesellschaft mbH, the company converted into a stock corporation (Aktiengesellschaft) in 2000. It focuses on the production of business notebooks, PCs, servers and workstations, which are sold through specialized IT retailers and system houses. The company also operates as a distributor of third-party branded hardware and components, serving over 3,000 specialist dealers and IT service providers. Bluechip's product range includes freely configurable servers, workstations, notebooks and desktop PCs under its own bluechip brand, as well as specialized systems for the medical, industrial and education sectors. The company offers Workplace-as-a-Service, a flexible rental-based workplace model, and its own cloud services with data location in Germany. Customers can configure custom systems via an online configurator in the bluechip webshop. In addition to manufacturing, bluechip provides hardware-oriented development, logistics and service services. Historically, bluechip was a main supplier to AgfaPhoto GmbH until its insolvency in 2005, producing a photo kiosk that bluechip continues to market. It also cooperates with Sony, manufacturing photo printers for the company. In October 2010, Bluechip Computer AG acquired the Brunen Group, one of Germany's largest online PC retailers, thereby indirectly acquiring the "One" brand of PCs and notebooks. In the 2021/2022 financial year, bluechip recorded revenue of 171 million euros. Bluechip emphasizes sustainability, operating a photovoltaic system on its logistics hall since 2020 that generates over 207,000 kWh of electricity annually and saves over 124 tons of CO2 per year. The company is certified according to ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management and DIN EN ISO 9001 for quality management. It is the main sponsor of the regional football club ZFC Meuselwitz and holds naming rights to its stadium.
History
Bluechip Computer AG was founded in 1992 by Hubert Wolf, who remains the CEO (Vorstandsvorsitzender), as bluechip Computer Großhandelsgesellschaft mbH. In 2000, the company converted into a stock corporation (Aktiengesellschaft). The company is headquartered in Meuselwitz, Thuringia, in the Altenburger Land district. Until the insolvency of AgfaPhoto GmbH in 2005, bluechip was a main supplier to the company and manufactured, among other things, a photo kiosk that bluechip continues to market itself. Another cooperation exists with Sony, for which bluechip manufactures photo printers, among other products. In the 2008/2009 financial year, bluechip generated revenue of 74.85 million euros with 220 employees in 25,000 m² of production and logistics buildings, and produced 135,000 PCs. In the 2009/2010 financial year, bluechip employed 230 people and generated revenue of 89 million euros. In the 2021/2022 financial year, bluechip recorded revenue of 171 million euros. In October 2010, it became known that Bluechip Computer AG was acquiring the Brunen Group, one of Germany's largest online PC retailers. Through this acquisition, bluechip also indirectly came into possession of the "One" brand, under which PCs and notebooks previously assembled by Brunen IT were sold. Under the motto "bluechip – CREATING COMPUTERS", the company operates in four business areas: manufacturing and distribution of freely configurable servers, workstations, notebooks and PCs under the "bluechip" own brands; trading in peripherals, notebooks and components through specialist retailers, system houses and other resellers; distribution of products from selected brand manufacturers; and hardware-oriented development, logistics and service services. One of bluechip's own developments is the photo kiosk, designed for instant photo printing and widely used wherever quick photo prints are needed. Another in-house development is a passively cooled mini-PC used, among other things, for point-of-sale solutions. The company is the main sponsor of the regional football club ZFC Meuselwitz and holds the naming rights to its stadium. In 2020, bluechip installed a photovoltaic system on the entire roof area of its new logistics hall, generating over 207,000 kWh of electrical energy per year and saving over 124 tons of CO2 annually. The company is certified according to ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management and DIN EN ISO 9001 for quality management.
