BOH Tea

BOH is a Malaysian tea brand that has been brewing teas of exceptional quality since 1929. It describes itself as one of the few fully-integrated tea companies in the world, growing, processing, packing and marketing its own brand of authentic, home-grown Malaysian teas. Its teas are grown in the Cameron Highlands, where 70% of all tea in Malaysia is produced, and BOH states it produces over 4 million kgs of tea annually. BOH exports its premium teas to various countries including the USA, Denmark, Germany, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and Brunei.

BOH traces its origins to John Archibald 'Archie' Russell, who arrived in Malaya as a child and later built businesses in mining, rubber and construction. During the Great Depression, Archie decided to start planting tea at Cameron Highlands together with A.B. Milne, a veteran planter from Sri Lanka, transforming virgin jungle terrain into the first highlands tea garden in the country, now known as BOH Plantations. The name BOH was derived from 'Bohea', the hills in Fujian Province also called Wuyi Hills, where tea was originally thought to have been discovered by the Emperor Shennong; Bohea was also the name of a premium tea grade in the early China tea trade, and Boh means precious happiness in Mandarin. Archie died of tuberculosis in Singapore at the early age of 50, and his widow Kathleen insisted BOH be retained despite financial difficulties. During World War II the estate was occupied by the Japanese and largely abandoned. After the war, Archie's son Tristan joined the business at the age of 21. BOH states it has been a leading tea producer in Malaysia since 1929 and describes itself as one of the few fully-integrated tea companies in the world, growing, processing, packing and marketing its own brand of authentic, home-grown Malaysian teas.
