Overview

BOM Cine is a Spanish thematic television channel dedicated to cinema, owned by the media group Squirrel Media. It began test broadcasts in Andalusia on 30 April 2014 under the name BOM, and gradually expanded to other Spanish regions including the Region of Murcia, the Community of Madrid, the Valencian Community and Catalonia. The channel's programming is focused on films of all genres and eras, including box-office hits, independent cinema and Spanish productions. It is available via DTT in several autonomous communities and through pay-TV platforms such as Vodafone TV, Virgin Telco and Orange TV. Internationally, it is distributed in Europe via pay television. The channel was rebranded as BOM Cine on 31 May 2019, consolidating its film-only schedule. It is part of Squirrel Media's portfolio, which also includes Vértice 360, BOM Radio and the Squirrel channels. In 2026, the Valencian audiovisual regulator CACV revoked its regional DTT license effective 29 July 2026 due to non-compliance with local programming obligations.

History

BOM Cine traces its origins to the channel BOM, which began test broadcasts in Andalusia on 30 April 2014. It expanded to the Region of Murcia on 7 June 2014 by replacing the channel La Opinión TV on its frequency. On 15 December 2014, the channel ceased broadcasts in Catalonia, and its frequencies were used to broadcast the Catalan public channel TV3 in high definition through a rental agreement with Grupo Godó, which lasted until June 2018. On 19 August 2016, the channel started broadcasting in the Community of Madrid, Andalusia and the Region of Murcia. On 1 September 2017, it began emissions in the Valencian Community, replacing Ehs.TV and Las Provincias TV through an agreement with Vocento. In Madrid, it broadcast on all DTT frequencies of La 10 Madrid from 19 August 2016. On 1 July 2017, the channel added soap operas, programmes, documentaries and films, aired from 11:00 to 17:00 and 18:00 to 0:00. On 12 November 2017, the programme Perdona? TV Show returned with a new season presented by Elsa Anka and Enric Escudé, but it was cancelled days later. On 1 December 2017, all soap operas were removed, and programming became based solely on films and documentaries with small teleshopping blocks. In 2018, BOM opted to air nine films daily (plus documentaries) without advertising breaks, with teleshopping from 01:45 until the first film of the day (between 09:30 and 11:00). On 6 August 2018, Canal Sur's cooking programmes returned to BOM on weekday mornings. Squirrel Capital, the investment company led by Pablo Pereiro Lage, acquired the channel to complete its media holding, which also includes Vértice 360 and Radio4G. On 31 May 2019, the channel changed its name to BOM Cine, and its programming became exclusively films. On 4 November 2019, it was set to begin broadcasts in Catalonia but awaited authorization from the Catalan Audiovisual Council. It finally started emissions in Catalonia on 16 March 2020, airing continuity and some films in Catalan. In January 2020, BOM Cine began airing the radio morning show Desde que amanece, apetece from its radio channel Radio 4G on weekdays from 7:00 to 10:00. In late December 2020, it aired some continuity, promotional videos and publimoscas in Valencian on its Valencian Community frequencies. On 14 April 2021, it joined the basic package of Movistar Plus+ on dial 28. From 14 August 2021, the channel broadcast in HD (720p) on DTT in Catalonia via the private autonomic multiplex, ceasing SD signal there. On 14 February 2025, it began HD broadcasts in the rest of its areas. On 22 November 2021, BOM Cine was replaced by Verdi Classics in Catalonia following an agreement between Emissions Digitals de Catalunya and Cines Verdi. On 31 March 2022, BOM Cine joined Vodafone TV on dial 59 in HD. It left Movistar Plus+ along with other Squirrel Media channels on 1 June 2023. On 30 January 2025, Orange TV added the channel to its basic television offer. In 2026, the Consell de l'Audiovisual de la Comunitat Valenciana (CACV) unanimously agreed to revoke BOM Cine's regional television license, effective 29 July 2026, citing repeated non-compliance with obligations including minimum percentage of Valencian-language programming, production in the Valencian Community, proximity programming and news content. According to CACV, the channel admitted it only aired 5% Valencian-language programming, 0% works by Valencian independent producers, and 95% of its programming was chain broadcasts.
