Overview

The Bortel Hut (German: Bortelhütte) is a mountain hut located on the Bortelalp in the Swiss canton of Valais, at an elevation of 2,113 metres above sea level. It serves as a retreat for hikers and nature lovers, offering overnight stays with half-board featuring regional products, as well as à la carte dining on its sun terrace or in its cosy parlour. The hut is particularly known as a starting point for the Bortelhorn (3,194 m), with the normal ascent taking about four hours. Other tour destinations include the Ganterhorn, the Furggubäumhorn, and the traverse to the Italian Alpe Veglia. A small climbing garden is located directly by the huts, and about 350 metres above the hut in a south-easterly direction lies the Bortelsee, one of the highest reservoirs in Switzerland. The Bortel Hut is owned by the regional energy service provider EWBN and has been managed and leased by the Brig Ski Club since its renovation in the 1990s. The hut is typically open during the summer season, from mid-June to late September, and offers a winter room for up to four people when closed. It is accessible via hiking trails from Berisal, Rosswald, and Rothwald, with free parking available at the trailheads.
