Overview
Boxer Retail is a South African discount grocery and general-merchandise retailer built around a value proposition for lower- and middle-income households. Its stores combine a limited-assortment, low-price grocery offer with everyday household goods, and many outlets also serve as community access points for services such as money transfers, airtime and bill payments. The chain grew out of the Boxer cash-and-carry and supermarket format that expanded across South Africa's townships, peri-urban areas and rural districts, and it later extended into neighbouring markets including Eswatini, Namibia, Botswana and Lesotho. Boxer was acquired by Pick n Pay, one of South Africa's largest listed grocery groups, which used the Boxer format as its discount and value engine alongside its mainstream Pick n Pay supermarkets. Over time Boxer became a substantial business in its own right, with a large store base and a distribution network oriented toward high-volume, low-cost operations. In 2024 Pick n Pay separated Boxer through an initial public offering and separate listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, creating a standalone discount retail company while Pick n Pay retained a controlling stake. As a listed company, Boxer Retail reports on store expansion, like-for-like sales growth and margin management in a competitive discount grocery market that includes rivals such as Shoprite and Usave. Its positioning rests on price leadership, efficient supply chain and a store format tailored to value-conscious shoppers, and it continues to open new stores and extend its service offer.
History
Boxer began as a discount and cash-and-carry grocery format in South Africa, aimed at shoppers who were underserved by mainstream supermarkets and who were highly price-sensitive. The format emphasised a focused range, low prices and efficient, high-volume stores, and it expanded through townships, peri-urban areas and rural districts where value retail was growing quickly. Pick n Pay, one of South Africa's largest listed grocery groups, acquired Boxer and developed it as the group's discount and value engine, running it alongside the mainstream Pick n Pay supermarket brand. Under Pick n Pay ownership Boxer grew its store base substantially and built a supply chain designed for low-cost, high-volume operations, while also adding in-store services such as airtime, money transfers and bill payments that matter to its customer base. The chain extended beyond South Africa into neighbouring markets including Eswatini, Namibia, Botswana and Lesotho. As Boxer scaled, it became a material part of Pick n Pay's business and a significant competitor in South African discount grocery. In 2024 Pick n Pay moved to separate the business, selling shares in an initial public offering and listing Boxer Retail on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as a standalone company, with Pick n Pay retaining a controlling interest. The listing gave Boxer its own capital-raising platform and reporting profile, and the company has continued to pursue store expansion and like-for-like sales growth in a market that includes Shoprite and other discount and value formats.

Boxer names Justin Galloway as CEO-designate in planned succession[3]
Boxer Retail announced a planned leadership transition, naming long-serving insider Justin Galloway as CEO-designate. Current CEO Marek Masojada is preparing to retire at the end of the current financial year after 33 years with the business. Galloway, a chartered accountant who joined Boxer in 2012 and currently leads the supply chain function, will formally take over as CEO on March 1, 2027 following a transition period alongside Masojada. The board said the succession plan was established at the time of Boxer's November 2024 listing and that a formal process evaluated internal and external candidates before selecting Galloway.
