Overview

BUG group (BUG-Gruppe), formally BUG Verkehrsbau SE, is a German corporate group specialising in railway construction and rail equipment. It was founded in 1990 by the civil engineer Martin Thomas, initially as a sole proprietorship and shortly afterwards as BUG Bau und Unterhaltung von Gleisanlagen GmbH, with its seat in the Treptow district of East Berlin. The company began with track-laying work and grew into a group offering engineering and civil engineering, specialist foundation engineering, electrical and communication technology, logistics, and machine rental. In 2000 it was converted into BUG Verkehrsbau AG, and in 2020, after merging with the Austrian BUGaltera AG, it became BUG Verkehrsbau SE as the parent company with various holdings. The group is headquartered in Berlin-Mahlsdorf and registered at the Amtsgericht Charlottenburg. It operates primarily in the new federal states of Germany but also elsewhere in the country. Its main customers include Deutsche Bahn, particularly its subsidiaries DB Netz and DB Station&Service, as well as Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe, and various industrial and connecting railways. The group's services cover track construction, civil engineering, specialist foundation engineering, engineering structures, communication and electrical engineering, logistics, equipment rental, conductor rails, overhead lines, high-voltage systems, signalling systems, safety and surveying, and traffic control technology. According to its official website, the group comprises 8 companies, employs over 850 people, generates more than 232 million euros in revenue, holds 15 certificates, offers over 70 job vacancies, and trains 87 apprentices. In the 2018 financial year the group first exceeded 100 million euros in revenue, reaching over 112 million euros. The name BUG-Gruppe was registered as a trademark at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office in 2018. On 1 April 2022, founder Martin Thomas moved to the supervisory board, Roland Müller became chairman of the board, and Marian Thomas, son of the founder, joined the board. The group presents itself under the motto "Wege in die Zukunft" (paths into the future) and emphasises responsibility, biodiversity, equal opportunities, and education through its #BUGACADEMY initiative.

History

BUG group was founded in May 1990 when the civil engineer Martin Thomas, who had studied at the Hochschule für Verkehrswesen in Dresden and had previously worked for more than ten years at the Deutsche Reichsbahn as technical manager for railway construction and maintenance in the Berlin area, registered a trade for BUG Bau und Unterhaltung von Gleisanlagen. On 11 September 1990 the company was founded as a GmbH with Thormählen Schweißtechnik GmbH as an equal partner. The new company was based in the Treptow district of East Berlin (Niederschöneweide), and mainly carried out railway construction work in the field of track construction. Still in 1990, BUG Bau- und Unterhaltung von Gleisanlagen GmbH moved its seat to Johannisthal, and later to Kaulsdorf. In December 1996 Thormählen Schweißtechnik left the company as a partner. In December 1998 the company moved its seat from Berlin to Dahlwitz-Hoppegarten in Brandenburg. With the relocation, the management founded BUG Vermietungsgesellschaft as a property company. In June 2000 the company was renamed BUG Verkehrsbau AG. In mid-2005 BUG Verkehrsbau AG expanded its area of activity with a branch in Senden, Bavaria, near Ulm. In February 2018 this branch was closed and relocated to Kleinrinderfeld as a BUG group location. Further locations followed: 2006 in Dresden, 2007 in Poznań, Poland, which was moved to Szczecin five years later and closed in 2018, and 2009 in Lübbenau. In April 2006 the first branch abroad in Europe was founded in the Turkish capital Ankara. After three and a half years it was closed again, partly for economic reasons. In March 2021 the Chemnitz location was founded. After the merger of BUG Verkehrsbau AG with the Austrian BUGaltera AG in 2020, BUG Verkehrsbau SE was created as the parent company with various holdings. Since November 2014 the company seat of BUG Verkehrsbau SE has been in Berlin-Mahlsdorf, and it is registered at the Amtsgericht Charlottenburg. In the 2018 financial year the group first achieved revenue of over 100 million euros, reaching over 112 million euros. In the same year the name BUG-Gruppe was registered as a trademark at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office. On 1 April 2022, the founder Martin Thomas moved to the supervisory board of BUG Verkehrsbau SE. Roland Müller moved from the board to the chairmanship of the board, and Marian Thomas, son of the former founder, took over the role of board member. After track construction, BUG Verkehrsbau SE began offering services in further business fields over the years. Through its subsidiaries it now works in engineering and civil engineering, electrical and communication technology, and machine rental. The expansion of the service portfolio was accompanied by spin-offs and the acquisition of holdings, forming the corporate group. The group's management has been exercised by Roland Müller and Marian Thomas since 1 April 2022.
