Overview
Byju's, stylised as BYJU'S, was an Indian educational-technology brand operated by Think and Learn Private Limited. Founded in 2011 by mathematics educator Byju Raveendran, Divya Gokulnath and an early team of students, the company grew from a digital learning venture into one of the world's most prominent—and later most financially distressed—edtech groups. Its original proposition was to make school and examination learning more engaging through short, animated video lessons, adaptive practice and self-paced study delivered through a mobile application. Raveendran had begun coaching students in mathematics in 2006. The business initially developed online programmes for Indian school pupils and competitive-examination candidates. Its flagship Byju's Learning App launched in August 2015, first targeting students in classes 4 through 12. The company subsequently added early-learning programmes, mathematics products for younger children, parent-facing tools and preparation for examinations such as IIT-JEE, NEET, CAT and IAS, as well as GRE and GMAT preparation. Its freemium model provided limited introductory access while placing most structured content and services behind paid subscriptions. The brand expanded rapidly during the late 2010s. By 2018 it reported 15 million users and 900,000 paid subscribers, and it became India's first edtech unicorn. It promoted animated lessons, typically structured in short modules, and claimed substantial use outside India's major metropolitan areas. The company also expanded into English-speaking international markets and announced plans for regional-language content. Its acquisitions broadened the group beyond the core app: TutorVista and Edurite strengthened online tutoring; Osmo added educational games and hardware-linked learning; WhiteHat Jr added coding education; Aakash Educational Services brought test-preparation centres; Great Learning added higher education and professional upskilling; and GeoGebra added mathematics software. Other acquisitions included Epic!, Toppr, Tynker, Gradeup, LabInApp, Scholr and Superset. The expansion was supported by large private funding rounds. Byju's became a decacorn in 2020 and was valued at approximately $22 billion after a 2022 funding round, making it one of the most highly valued private edtech companies globally. It also pursued brand visibility through sponsorships of the Indian cricket team, Kerala Blasters FC and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Its social-impact initiatives included Education for All and Byju's Give, which sought to provide refurbished devices loaded with learning content to children with limited digital access. The company's growth model later came under severe pressure. Delayed audited accounts, aggressive acquisition spending, layoffs, disputes with lenders, complaints about sales practices, regulatory scrutiny and litigation damaged confidence in the business. By 2022 and 2024 it had carried out significant workforce reductions and faced a funding shortage. In 2024, Indian insolvency proceedings were initiated over unpaid obligations, although parts of the litigation developed through appeals and settlements. Its United States division filed for Chapter 11 protection in February 2024. By October 2024, Raveendran publicly described the company's value as effectively zero. As of 2025, the parent company remained associated with insolvency proceedings in India, while the status of the consumer-facing brand and its operating businesses was uncertain.
History
Byju's was created through Think and Learn Private Limited, founded in 2011 by mathematics teacher Byju Raveendran, Divya Gokulnath and an early group of students. Raveendran had been coaching mathematics since 2006, and the initial business used online video lessons to extend tutoring beyond the classroom. Its early focus was Indian K–12 education and preparation for competitive examinations. The company launched the Byju's Learning App in August 2015. The product used short animated lessons, practice exercises and a self-paced structure to explain academic concepts. It initially served classes 4 to 12 and later added programmes for younger children, including a mathematics app and a parent-connect application in 2017. By 2018 the company reported 15 million users and 900,000 paid users, and it became India's first edtech unicorn. It later stated that a majority of its learners came from outside India's largest metropolitan areas. Growth accelerated through fundraising, marketing and acquisitions. Byju's acquired TutorVista and Edurite from Pearson in 2017, Osmo in 2019, WhiteHat Jr, LabInApp and Scholr in 2020, and Aakash Educational Services, Epic!, Great Learning and Toppr in 2021. It also acquired Gradeup, later rebranded BYJU'S Exam Prep, Tynker and GeoGebra. These transactions expanded the company into children's games, coding, test preparation, professional learning, mathematics software and offline education. In 2021 and 2022, the group also developed plans for international expansion, a Doha research and development centre, a hybrid network of tuition centres and BYJU'S Future School. The brand became a major advertiser and sports sponsor. It secured Indian cricket-team jersey rights in 2019, became title sponsor of Kerala Blasters FC in 2020 and was announced as an official sponsor of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It also launched Education for All in 2020, followed by a device-refurbishment programme called Byju's Give. The same period exposed weaknesses in the company's expansion strategy. Acquisitions and rapid hiring increased costs, while the company faced questions about financial reporting, sales methods, customer complaints, employee treatment and the sustainability of its financing. It laid off thousands of employees in 2022 and continued restructuring as it sought profitability. A dispute with lenders over a $1.2 billion term loan became a central financial problem in 2023 and 2024. Regulatory and legal pressure intensified. The Enforcement Directorate searched company offices in 2023. In 2024, Indian insolvency proceedings were initiated after a creditor alleged non-payment of dues. Although an appellate tribunal approved a settlement, the Supreme Court later overturned that decision and returned the matter to the creditors' process. The US business separately entered Chapter 11 proceedings, while a US court considered disputes about loan proceeds and company disclosures. By late 2024 the reported valuation had collapsed, with Raveendran saying that the company was effectively worth zero. Insolvency proceedings and operational uncertainty continued into 2025.

K–12 digital learning · 2015
BYJU'S Learning App
The flagship mobile application offered curriculum-aligned lessons for school students, initially covering classes 4 through 12. BYJU'S Future School
Announced in 2021, Future School was designed as an interactive learning platform rather than a purely passive video library. It proposed live or interactive instruction in coding, mathematics, science, English, music and fine arts, using storytelling and participation to serve children in several international markets.

Aakash
Aakash Educational Services gave the group an established test-preparation business with physical centres and programmes for Indian entrance examinations, including medical and engineering pathways. Its acquisition represented Byju's move from app-based learning into blended and offline tutoring.
