Overview
Camptourist is a defunct East German brand of folding tent trailers (Faltcaravan) manufactured by VEB Fahrzeugwerk Olbernhau. The brand evolved from the earlier Campifix and Klappfix models, which were first produced in 1958. The name Camptourist was adopted for the successor of the Klappfix 64, and the brand continued until production ceased in 1990 following German reunification. Camptourist trailers were known for their lightweight construction, making them suitable for small cars like the Trabant, and for their innovative folding mechanisms that allowed a full camping tent to be erected quickly. Models such as the Camptourist 5, 6, and 7 featured various improvements, including symmetric designs, simplified setup, and enhanced storage. Today, many of these trailers remain in use, and the brand is remembered as a classic example of East German engineering and camping culture.
History
The history of Camptourist begins with the Campifix, a folding tent trailer first produced in 1958 by VEB Fahrzeugwerk Olbernhau in East Germany. Based on a 1930s idea, the early Campifix was primarily a wooden construction, but later models incorporated more metal and plastic parts, becoming lighter. In 1964, the Klappfix 64 was introduced, featuring an asymmetric design where the opened lid rested on the ground, creating two different height levels. The successor to the Klappfix 64 was renamed Camptourist. The Camptourist 5, produced from the late 1960s, retained an asymmetric design but offered improved storage access and an optional luxury variant with additional rear storage. From 1973, a braked version was available, and in 1982, the CT 5-3 introduced coil spring suspension. The Camptourist 6, produced from 1970, switched to a symmetric design, with the lid and additional sleeping areas at the same height. The kitchen unit became detachable and could be swung to the side or set up separately. The Camptourist 6-1, available with brakes from 1973, was presented at the Leipzig Autumn Fair in 1974 with a modified main tent frame that simplified setup. In 1978, the Camptourist 6-2 was introduced for 1979 production, featuring a higher lid and a significantly simplified setup process, reducing assembly time from 30 to 10 minutes. It was offered in Standard, Normal, and Luxus trim levels. The Camptourist 7 introduced a new folding principle, eliminating the high lid and using two flat sleeping platforms. Production of the Klappfix and Camptourist ceased in 1990 after German reunification. Despite the end of production, many Camptourist trailers remain in use today, and the brand is celebrated for its role in East German camping culture.
