Overview
Canon is a Japanese multinational technology company whose businesses grew from precision cameras into a broad portfolio spanning imaging, printing, healthcare, network security, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and other optical and industrial technologies. The company was established in Tokyo in 1937 as Precision Optical Instruments, Co., Ltd., following several years of work by the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, founded in 1933 by Takeshi Mitarai, Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida, and Takeo Maeda. Its early ambition was to create a domestically developed 35 mm camera capable of competing with European designs. The prototype Kwanon, named after Kannon, the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion, represented the company's formative camera project and provided the linguistic origin of the Canon brand. Canon initially depended on external suppliers for optical glass and lenses, including lenses from Nippon Kogaku, the company later known as Nikon. It gradually developed its own optical, mechanical, electronic, and manufacturing capabilities. Early diversification included medical imaging: in 1940 Canon developed Japan's first domestically produced indirect X-ray camera. During the postwar period, it expanded from rangefinder and single-lens-reflex cameras into television-broadcast lenses, calculators, office equipment, and other precision products. The company changed its name to Canon Camera Co., Inc. in 1947 and shortened it to Canon Inc. in 1969, reflecting a strategy that increasingly extended beyond cameras. The modern Canon brand was shaped by several influential product and technology transitions. The Canon F-1 and FD lens system, introduced in the early 1970s, established a professional camera platform. The AE-1, launched in 1976, helped popularize electronically controlled cameras by incorporating a microcomputer and emphasizing accessible operation. In 1985 Canon commercialized bubble-jet inkjet printing technology, creating a foundation for its consumer and office printer businesses. In 1987 it introduced the EOS autofocus camera system and EOS 650, combining electronic control with a new lens mount and autofocus architecture. The EOS family later expanded into professional still photography, cinema, broadcast production, and, from 2018, the full-frame mirrorless EOS R System. Canon's business is organized around several large areas. Imaging includes interchangeable-lens cameras, compact cameras, professional video and cinema equipment, broadcast lenses, image sensors, projectors, displays, and related software. Office products include inkjet and laser printers, multifunction devices, scanners, production presses, document-management systems, and workflow software. Healthcare products are marketed through Canon Medical Systems and include computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, digital radiography, ophthalmic systems, and other diagnostic equipment. The industrial business includes semiconductor and flat-panel-display lithography equipment, nanoimprint lithography, industrial cameras, measurement devices, optical components, network cameras, video-management software, and specialized manufacturing systems. Canon used acquisitions to accelerate this diversification. Océ expanded the company's commercial-printing capabilities; Axis Communications strengthened network cameras and security; Milestone Systems added open-platform video-management software; and Toshiba Medical Systems, renamed Canon Medical Systems, established a major healthcare platform. These businesses operate alongside Canon's historical imaging and office divisions, allowing the group to sell both consumer products and complex business-to-business systems. Canon is positioned around optical precision, image quality, reliability, engineering depth, and integrated workflows. Its red wordmark and EOS, RF, PIXMA, imageCLASS, imageRUNNER, and Canon Medical brands are recognized across consumer, professional, enterprise, h…
History
Canon's origins lie in the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory, established in Tokyo in 1933 by Takeshi Mitarai, Goro Yoshida, Saburo Uchida, and Takeo Maeda. The group sought to develop a Japanese 35 mm camera capable of competing with Leica and other European products. A prototype called Kwanon was completed in the mid-1930s. The name referred to Kannon, a Buddhist figure associated with compassion, and later evolved into the internationally usable Canon brand. In 1937 the business was incorporated as Precision Optical Instruments, Co., Ltd. Canon's earliest cameras were assembled with important externally sourced components. The company did not initially possess its own optical-glass production facilities and used Nikkor lenses supplied by Nippon Kogaku, later known as Nikon. This dependence gradually diminished as Canon expanded its own expertise in lens design, precision mechanics, electronics, and manufacturing. In 1940 the company developed Japan's first domestically produced indirect X-ray camera, an early indication that Canon's technology could serve medical and industrial applications as well as photography. The company adopted the name Canon Camera Co., Inc. in 1947. During the 1950s and 1960s it broadened its camera range and moved into adjacent optical and electronic products. It developed television-broadcast zoom lenses, introduced the Reflex Zoom 8 and Canonflex, and produced the Canon 7 rangefinder camera with a high-speed 50 mm lens. Canon also diversified beyond imaging: the Canola 130, introduced in 1964, was an early Japanese ten-key electronic calculator. The company continued experimenting with camera architectures, including the Canon Pellix, which used a stationary semitransparent mirror to permit photography through the mirror. In 1969 the corporate name was shortened to Canon Inc., signaling that the business was no longer defined solely by cameras. The 1970s brought major developments in professional photography. The Canon F-1 and FD lens family created a sophisticated professional SLR platform, while the AE-1, introduced in 1976, used an embedded microcomputer and helped make electronically controlled SLR photography accessible to a much wider market. Canon's emphasis on electronics, automation, and user-oriented design became a recurring feature of later products. Canon entered office technology more forcefully during the 1970s and 1980s. The company developed electrophotographic and copying technologies and introduced bubble-jet inkjet printing in 1985. In 1987 it launched the Electro-Optical System, or EOS, together with the EOS 650 autofocus SLR. EOS replaced the earlier FD mount with a fully electronic lens interface and eventually became Canon's central still-imaging platform. The same period also saw the establishment of the Canon Foundation and the formulation of the Kyosei corporate philosophy, which Canon describes as a principle of living and working together for the common good. During the 1990s Canon extended EOS into professional autofocus and digital photography. The EOS 5 offered eye-controlled autofocus, and the PowerShot 600 became one of Canon's early digital cameras. Canon also introduced image stabilization in a commercially available SLR lens and developed compact Advanced Photo System products sold under names including ELPH and IXUS. The company entered the digital video camcorder market in 1997, while projectors, scanners, printers, copiers, and medical systems continued to broaden its revenue base. The 2000s were marked by the transition from film to digital imaging and by deeper participation in office and professional production printing. Canon expanded digital cameras, DSLRs, camcorders, projectors, scanners, multifunction devices, and laser-printing technologies. It also became an important supplier of print engines used in products sold by other manufacturers, including early Apple LaserWriter and Hewlett-Packard laser-printer families. In 2009 Canon announced a major cash offer for Dutch printing-equipment company Océ. Canon obtained majority ownership in 2010 and completed the acquisition of all shares by the end of 2011. The transaction strengthened Canon's presence in high-volume commercial printing and production workflows. Canon's diversification accelerated during the 2010s. It acquired or integrated businesses in office solutions, semiconductor manufacturing, industrial imaging, network security, and healthcare. Molecular Imprints, later developed as Canon Nanotechnologies, strengthened Canon's position in nanoimprint lithography. Milestone Systems added open-platform video-management software, while Axis Communications brought network cameras and related security technologies into the group. In 2016 Canon acquired Toshiba Medical Systems, later renamed Canon Medical Systems, in a major expansion of diagnostic imaging. Canon also strengthened its U.S. commercial presence with a new Canon U.S.A. headquarters in Melville, New York. In imaging, Canon launched the Cinema EOS system in 2011 and continued developing professional cinema cameras, broadcast lenses, and large-format production equipment. The EOS line reached a cumulative production milestone of 100 million cameras in 2019. In 2018 Canon announced the EOS R System, its full-frame mirrorless platform, together with the RF lens mount. The mirrorless system became a principal growth platform as the interchangeable-lens market shifted away from traditional DSLRs. The 2020s have emphasized strategic transformation, healthcare, security, industrial equipment, and advanced imaging. Canon renamed Océ as Canon Production Printing in 2020, introduced high-sensitivity and single-photon-avalanche-diode image sensors, expanded the EOS VR System, and continued development of AI-supported medical imaging. Canon's group companies also expanded network-camera analytics, commercial printing, label and packaging presses, and industrial automation. In 2023 Canon introduced a new generation of nanoimprint lithography systems and established Canon Healthcare USA. Canon's 2026 medical-business materials describe a further organizational integration of Canon Medical Systems with Canon Inc. Canon remains an active Tokyo-listed corporation whose brand spans consumer devices, professional equipment, enterprise workflows, healthcare systems, and industrial manufacturing technologies.
