Overview

Cantus (also known as Cantus Records) is a Croatian record label, music publisher and cultural events organiser based in Zagreb. It was founded in February 2000 by the Croatian Composers' Society (Hrvatsko društvo skladatelja) with the aim of promoting Croatian musical culture at national and international level. Over time it has become a relevant partner in specialist cultural fields, promoting works by contemporary Croatian composers and Croatian classics, young performers, Croatian ethno music and national jazz production. The company's main activities are discographic, sheet-music and book publishing across all areas of musical art, as well as the organisation of music events such as the Music Biennale Zagreb, the Opatija Music Forum (Glazbena tribina), Zagrebfest and author concerts of Croatian composers. Cantus also provides consulting services, exhibitions and conferences, and regularly publishes the journal of the Croatian Composers' Society, the magazine Cantus. Cantus has released numerous albums, including recordings by ethno-jazz artist Tamara Obrovac and Transhistria Ensemble (2 albums), jazz pianist Matija Dedić (2 albums), the Boilers All Stars jazz ensemble, singer-songwriter Arsen Dedić (2 albums), pianist Vladimir Krpan, the Zagreb Soloists, Cantus Ensemble, the Slovenian Chamber Choir (2 albums) and the Zagreb Quartet (3 albums). It also released the debut album of pianist Maksim Mrvica (Geste, 2001) and of mezzo-soprano Renata Pokupić with pianist Đorđe Stanetti (After The Crossing, 2006). As executive producer, Cantus is involved in major Croatian music festivals. The Music Biennale Zagreb, held since 1961, has presented many major musical achievements of the 20th century; in 2007 KulturForum Europa awarded it a culture prize. The festival's director is Ivo Josipović, artistic director Berislav Šipuš, and the executive festival producer is Cantus d.o.o., with director Mirjana Matić. Cantus is also executive producer of Zagrebfest, the oldest Croatian popular music festival (founded 1953), and of Chansonfest, an international chanson festival first held in 1998. The Opatija Music Forum, founded in 1963, is held annually in November to promote Croatian contemporary composers of serious music. Cantus operates as a private company owned by the Croatian Composers' Society. Its catalogue spans contemporary classical, jazz, ethno and popular music, and its publishing output includes scores, books and catalogues, often in cooperation with external clients such as the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, Zagreb Soloists, Zagreb Quartet, Croatian Music Youth and Croatian Radiotelevision.
