Overview

Cap Canal was a French public-service television channel devoted to education and knowledge. It was created in 1991 by the City of Lyon in partnership with the French national education system. The channel was originally focused on primary education, broadcasting programmes for pupils, teachers, parents and educators. Over time it broadened its scope to cover all ages of education and, from 2006, produced programmes in partnership with the University of Lyon. From 2006 to 2009 the channel was supervised by the educationalist Philippe Meirieu. In January 2012 the City of Lyon delegated the operation of the channel to the Société d'Économie Mixte Lyon TV Câble. Cap Canal was available on cable in the Rhône region and later expanded nationally. It ceased broadcasting in 2014. The channel positioned itself as a 'stock' rather than 'flow' channel, offering free online viewing of all its produced programmes.

History

Cap Canal was created in 1991 by the City of Lyon in partnership with the French national education system. Until the start of the 2006 school year, it broadcast programmes mainly focused on primary education, including shows for pupils such as Les Couleurs de l'orchestre and Les Enquêtes de la luciole, as well as programmes for adults, teachers, parents and educators. From September 2005 to 2009, Philippe Meirieu presented Cap Infos, a programme specifically devoted to pedagogy. There was also a family programme, Allée de l'enfance, presented by Aude Spilmont. From the start of the 2006 school year, Cap Canal broadened its focus to all ages of education and, in partnership with the University of Lyon, produced a programme devoted to academic knowledge, Cap Sup. Since 2008, the channel was also a partner of AFPA to produce a programme on lifelong vocational training: Chemins de réussites. In January 2012, the City of Lyon delegated the operation of the channel to the Société d'Économie Mixte Lyon TV Câble. Cap Canal then established a partnership with the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the Institut Français de l'Éducation, which became co-producers of the magazines devoted to education: Cap Infos, Allée de l'enfance and Questions de parents. The channel ceased broadcasting in 2014.
