Overview
Capital Intelligence (CI) Ratings is an EU-regulated credit rating agency that has been providing independent and objective credit ratings since 1982. Established in 1982 to provide research and information on the capital and money markets of the Middle East and North Africa, it launched its credit rating service in 1984. It is registered as a credit rating agency in the European Union and supervised by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), and is recognised as an External Credit Assessment Institution (ECAI) by the European Banking Authority and by supervisory authorities in a number of GCC and broader MENA countries. It assigns credit ratings to banks (conventional and Islamic), non-bank financial institutions, corporates, insurance companies, sovereigns, sub-sovereigns and supra-national entities, as well as issuance programmes and financial instruments, and offers subscription-based access to its credit research.
History
Capital Intelligence (CI) Ratings has been providing credit ratings and credit analysis for more than 40 years. It was established in 1982 to provide research and information on the capital and money markets of the Middle East and North Africa, and launched its credit rating service in 1984 in response to market demand for in-depth and objective analysis of the counterparty risk of the region's banks. Building on its reputation in emerging markets, it extended geographical coverage to Emerging Europe and Asia (including India and China) and expanded sectoral coverage to non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), non-financial corporates and governments. It is registered as a credit rating agency in the European Union, supervised by ESMA, and recognised as an ECAI by the EBA and by supervisory authorities in a number of GCC and broader MENA countries.
