Overview

Cardiowave is an independent Ukrainian music label and creative association based in Odesa. It was founded in 2005 by Dmitry Vekov and Sergey Lomanovsky, the creators of the radio program Atmosfera, which had been broadcast on Odesa radio since 1996. The label grew out of that program's community of musicians and listeners, and its name — coined by members of the band Flëur to describe their own style — literally means "a wave coming from the heart." Cardiowave presents itself not as a genre but as an approach to music made sincerely, regardless of style or mood. The label's mission is to support talented independent musicians, organize concerts and festivals, and release music albums. Its roster and circle of friends have included Flëur, Legendarnye Plastilinovye Nogi (ЛПН), Amurekimuri, Verba and Olya Pulatova, MRF, Kto-to Padayet, Elektroklew, Belka i Strelka, Biblioteka Prospero, Cheshires, My Personal Murderer, and Georgy Matviiv, among others. Cardiowave also runs Radio Cardiowave and maintains an archive of Atmosfera broadcasts from 1996 to 2012. From its founding, Cardiowave organized concerts and musical evenings for its artists and allied acts. From 22 to 24 August 2008 it held the first Interferentsiya festival in Odesa, followed by editions in Saint Petersburg and Moscow; a compilation album, Interferentsiya, was released from the 2008 festival. The festival continued in 2009 (Odesa and Ilyichivsk, plus a Moscow edition in November), 2010 (Odesa clubs Vykhod and ShUZZ), and 2011 (Odesa summer club Ostrov Sokrovishch). Cardiowave remains an active independent label and community, releasing music on digital platforms and maintaining its website, radio, and social channels. It is a private, non-listed entity.

History

Cardiowave's history as a music label begins in 2005, though its roots reach further back to the radio program Atmosfera, which appeared on Odesa radio in 1996. Created by Dmitry Vekov (author and host) and Sergey Lomanovsky (sound engineer), Atmosfera was described as "radio that connects kindred souls," initially bringing together people through a shared love of music that was not played on commercial airwaves. Later came "atmospheric" evenings that allowed like-minded people to meet, musicians to find listeners, and listeners to discover distinctive artists. In the program's tenth year, the music label was founded by the creators of Atmosfera. The word "cardiowave" was first used as an answer to a question about the stylistic affiliation of Flëur's music. Literally it means "a wave coming from the heart." Cardiowave is not a musical style; the term applies to any music created sincerely, from the soul, regardless of style or mood — a wave from the heart that needs no explanation and has no stylistic, geographic, or temporal boundaries. The label continued the traditions of Atmosfera by organizing concerts and musical evenings. One of its first albums was a promotional compilation, "Chetverg... Polnoch..." (Thursday... Midnight...). Cardiowave's community formed in Odesa around the radio program, and alongside Vekov and Lomanovsky, Vladislav Mitsovsky worked on the label's operations. The label's roster and circle of friends included Flëur, Legendarnye Plastilinovye Nogi (LPN), Amurekimuri, Verba and Olya Pulatova, MRF, Kto-to Padayet, Elektroklew, Belka i Strelka, Biblioteka Prospero, Cheshires, My Personal Murderer, and Georgy Matviiv. With the label's support, concerts by its groups and friendly acts, as well as musical evenings, were held from its founding. From 22 to 24 August 2008, the first Interferentsiya festival took place in Odesa. It was followed by festivals in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. A compilation album, Interferentsiya, was released from the 2008 festival. In 2009 the festival ran from 21 to 24 August: the first two days at the Odesa club Vykhod, the closing two days in Ilyichivsk. On 22 November, Interferentsiya-2009 was held in Moscow at the club Ikra. In 2010 Interferentsiya took place from 26 to 28 August in Odesa at the clubs Vykhod and ShUZZ, and in 2011 from 19 to 21 August in Odesa at the summer seaside club Ostrov Sokrovishch. Cardiowave also operates Radio Cardiowave and maintains an archive of Atmosfera broadcasts from 1996 to 2012. The label remains active, releasing music on digital platforms and maintaining its website, radio, and social media presence.
