Overview
CARE Deutschland e.V. is a German non-governmental organisation that carries out development cooperation and emergency relief. It is one of 20 sister organisations in the CARE International network headquartered in Geneva. According to its own statements, the organisation is politically, religiously and ethically independent. CARE Deutschland was founded on 29 August 1980 as the third CARE organisation after those in the United States and Canada. CARE International today is an association of 20 independently operating national CARE organisations, including those in Egypt, Australia, Denmark, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Japan, Canada, the Caucasus, Luxembourg, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Peru, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Czech Republic and the United States. To reflect the international profile of the originally American organisation, a third and so far final renaming to "Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere" took place in 1992. The association focuses on emergency relief and poverty reduction. Emergency relief is intended to encompass "disaster prevention, immediate aid and the subsequent reconstruction assistance". Permanent cooperation with local partners is established so that help can be provided quickly and effectively in an emergency. CARE International worked in 121 countries in 2024 and reached around 53.4 million people with 1,450 aid projects. CARE Deutschland implemented 147 of its own projects in 47 crisis regions in 2024, reaching almost 3 million people. The focus of CARE's work is gender equality for women and girls. CARE creates income opportunities and supports women and girls with health and hygiene products tailored to their needs. It also seeks to strengthen their voice in political processes. Further focal areas include gender equality, education, nutrition, climate change and emergency relief. For example, CARE provided initial emergency aid in Turkey after the severe earthquakes in 2023 and today supports reconstruction. In community centres in Ukraine, CARE together with partner organisations offers psychosocial support and helps survivors of conflict-related and gender-based violence. In Latin America, CARE supports indigenous communities in implementing projects independently that improve the living conditions of these often marginalised groups. In Yemen, CARE supports women's groups responsible for water management in their villages. In the Balkans, the association advocates for the Roma minority and promotes peace work. The aid projects are financed by private and corporate donations as well as public funding bodies such as the German federal government and the European Union. In 2024, income amounted to around 111.7 million euros. CARE Deutschland is a member of the German Donations Council and has been awarded its donation certificate for transparency. The certificate attests to trustworthy and transparent handling of donated funds. In addition, CARE was recognised by the consulting and analysis firm Phineo as particularly "effective" and "high-performing". Besides belonging to CARE International, CARE Deutschland is involved in the alliance Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH). The organisation is also a member of the Association of German Development and Humanitarian Aid Non-Governmental Organisations (VENRO). At European level, CARE is a member of "Concord". CARE Deutschland e.V. is involved in the Global Compact initiative and is a signatory of the Initiative Transparent Civil Society. Prominent supporters include the author and publicist Roger Willemsen, who supported the "Bonner für Afghanistan" campaign in 2005 and visited a CARE project in Nepal in 2009. The cabaret artist Horst Schroth conducted an education project for children in Argentina with CARE for four years and supports the "Kick it" project in South Africa, a care and AIDS education project for young people near Pretoria. The project was also funded by the Bundesliga Foundation.
History
CARE Deutschland e.V. was founded on 29 August 1980 as the third CARE organisation after those in the United States and Canada. The organisation is structured with a members' assembly, an administrative board, a board of trustees and a full-time executive board. The administrative board is elected by the members' assembly. It consists of seven members with a presidium at the top comprising the president, two vice-presidents and the chair of the finance commission. It appoints the full-time executive board, consisting of the secretary general and a deputy secretary general. The executive board represents CARE Deutschland in and out of court. The executive board and administrative board are advised by the board of trustees. Heribert Scharrenbroich has been chair of the board of trustees since November 2013. Rita Süssmuth was patron. The board of trustees includes many personalities from politics, business, science and society. The annual members' assembly determines the guidelines of CARE Deutschland. It is the highest supervisory and decision-making body. Between members' assemblies, the administrative board performs the supervisory function. In addition, an independent auditor appointed by the administrative board audits the annual financial statements. The association focuses on emergency relief and poverty reduction. Emergency relief is intended to encompass "disaster prevention, immediate aid and the subsequent reconstruction assistance". The project was also funded by the Bundesliga Foundation. In early 2014, Steffen Groth supported the Young Men Initiative with young people in Kosovo. In a ten-day acting workshop, he addressed common gender clichés and everyday problems such as drugs and violence with the young men. The project was accompanied by WDR. Since 2010, actress Judith Hoersch has supported the organisation. Most recently, she visited a project as part of the "Im Einsatz für das Leben – Hebammen weltweit" campaign.
