Overview

Cave Hill Cemetery is a cemetery located in Louisville, Kentucky. It offers historical tours and burial services. The cemetery has a heritage foundation dedicated to its preservation.

History

The City fathers acquired part of the old farm that the Johnston family called Cave Hill. The farm had a good spring emanating from a cave, but its stone quarries were of principal interest. In late 1846, the mayor and city council added the graveyard component to Cave Hill. They appointed a committee that selected a civil engineer, Edmund Francis Lee (1811-1857), who had firsthand experience of the garden cemetery concept.
