Overview
CBeebies is the BBC's preschool media brand, aimed primarily at children aged six and under. It combines a British free-to-air television channel with digital services, radio, on-demand programming, publishing, home-video releases, licensing activity and location-based entertainment. The brand is designed to provide age-appropriate educational and entertaining content while maintaining a calm, accessible and reassuring environment for young children and their families. The CBeebies television service was launched on 11 February 2002, at the same time as CBBC, following the separation of the BBC's existing children's programming block into services aimed at different age groups. CBeebies serves preschool viewers, while CBBC is intended for older children. The UK channel broadcasts daily from the early morning until 7:00 p.m., after which BBC Four uses the shared broadcast capacity. It does not carry commercial advertising; continuity links, trailers and presenter-led segments connect programmes. A distinctive feature of the UK service is in-vision continuity. Presenters speak directly to children, introduce programmes, demonstrate activities, display viewers' birthday cards and support short educational or creative segments. The channel's identity has also been shaped by its Bugbie characters, colourful animated mascots and changing presentation environments. Its final scheduled programme is generally CBeebies Bedtime Stories, in which a guest storyteller reads a picture book. The strand has included public figures and has also incorporated accessible formats such as British Sign Language, Braille and stories addressing personal experiences including childhood speech difficulties. CBeebies has expanded beyond linear television. Its website, launched alongside the channel, provides games, songs, printable activities and programme-related material, while CBeebies iPlayer offers a child-focused selection of BBC programming. CBeebies Radio began as a scheduled service in 2007 and later continued through online services and BBC Sounds. The brand has also appeared in magazines, audio releases, DVD compilations and music albums. BBC Studios operates international CBeebies feeds and branded programme blocks. These services have appeared across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, the Middle East, North America and other markets, with schedules, presentation and distribution arrangements varying by territory. Some international services have closed or moved platforms as a result of commercial and carriage decisions. CBeebies therefore functions both as a domestic BBC public-service channel and as an internationally licensed and distributed children's entertainment brand. The channel received its first major visual identity change on 15 March 2023, adopting a design aligned with the BBC's wider corporate branding. The rebrand introduced a new logo, redesigned Bugbies and updated animated presentation. CBeebies remains part of the BBC's Children's and Education activities, with domestic strategy overseen within the BBC and international operations handled by BBC Studios.
History
CBeebies emerged from a BBC review of its children's portfolio in 2001. The proposed service was initially associated with the working title BBC Playbox, but the CBeebies name was announced in November 2001 as part of the separation of the existing children's block into two age-targeted brands. CBeebies would serve preschool children, while CBBC would address older children. The channel launched on 11 February 2002. Its first schedule included Teletubbies, Binka, Step Inside and Bits and Bobs. From launch, the service was conceived as more than a programme schedule: presenters, animated characters and themed continuity were used to create a consistent environment for young viewers. The channel initially shared transmission capacity with BBC Knowledge and subsequently with BBC Four, which begins after the CBeebies schedule ends in the evening. The brand expanded into audio, publishing and digital media during its first decade. CBeebies Radio began in 2007, and a weekly magazine was introduced in 2006 before later becoming CBeebies Magazine. The website developed into a substantial child-oriented service with games, songs, printable activities and programme microsites. CBeebies iPlayer and radio services extended the brand beyond scheduled television, while BBC Video, 2Entertain and other distributors released programme compilations on home video. CBeebies also developed a substantial international presence under BBC Studios. International feeds and blocks were launched in markets including Poland, Australia, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Distribution has not been uniform: some channels have been withdrawn, replaced, moved to new platforms or converted into branded blocks. International versions often use local presenters, dubbing or region-specific continuity, while retaining the core preschool positioning. In the UK, the BBC moved its Children's department to MediaCityUK in Salford, and CBeebies continuity production became associated with Dock10 studios. Management structures also evolved. The former controller role was closed as part of a broader commissioning reorganisation in 2017, and the BBC later announced a dedicated preschool commissioning and acquisitions role. Strategic responsibility for domestic children's and education services sits within the BBC's Children's and Education division. CBeebies Land opened at Alton Towers in May 2014. The attraction adapted parts of the theme park into a CBeebies-themed area, providing rides and experiences based on the brand's characters and programmes. This represented an extension from screen media into family leisure and experiential entertainment. On 15 March 2023, CBeebies introduced its first major channel identity refresh. The new system followed the BBC's corporate design direction, replacing the original launch-era logo and modifying the Bugbie characters into forms that visually echoed the BBC logo. New two- and three-dimensional animated scenes and idents accompanied the change. CBeebies continues to operate as a major BBC preschool brand in the UK, while BBC Studios manages its international distribution and commercial extensions.
