Overview

Cellix Limited is an Irish microfluidics and cell-analysis company headquartered in Dublin. It was established in 2006 as a spin-out from the Departments of Physics and Clinical Medicine at Trinity College Dublin, co-founded by Vivienne Williams, Dmitry Kashanin and Prof. Igor Shvets. The company began by developing microfluidic biochips for cell-based assays, particularly cell adhesion under flow in plastic microfluidic channels, and expanded into a broader portfolio of microfluidic pumps, biochips and instruments. Cellix's product lines include the VenaFlux Solutions for thrombosis and inflammation studies, the Inish Solutions for cell analysis, and microfluidic pumps and chips for droplet generation and organ-on-chip applications. Its products are used by academic laboratories as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, with distribution partnerships across Europe, the United States and Asia. A key positioning point is that Cellix's assays can serve as more representative alternatives to animal testing, with advantages such as low blood volumes. The company has developed proprietary biochips and microfluidic pumps underpinned by patents in Europe and the US. It introduced cell detection methods on-chip using impedance spectroscopy, resulting in the Inish Analyser, which is being developed for applications including quality control for CAR-T cells. In 2023 Cellix was acquired by Randox Laboratories, and its microfluidics expertise is being applied within Randox to develop new diagnostic tests. Cellix remains active, with recent news including participation in the EASYGEN project, an €8 million European consortium led by Fresenius to decentralize CAR-T cell therapy and improve hospital workflows.

History

Cellix Limited was established in 2006 as a spin-out from the Departments of Physics and Clinical Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. It was co-founded by Vivienne Williams, Dmitry Kashanin and Prof. Igor Shvets. The company initially focused on developing microfluidic biochips for cell-based assays, specifically cell adhesion under flow in microfluidic channels fabricated in plastic. These assays were designed to model thrombosis (platelet adhesion, aggregation and thrombi formation) and inflammatory processes. Cellix designed and developed novel biochips and microfluidic pumps, supported by several patents in Europe and the US. The company expanded its biochip range to enable cell-cell adhesion assays and transmigration assays. It further developed its product portfolio of microfluidic pumps and biochips for broader applications including droplet microfluidics and organ-on-chip. Cellix also began introducing cell detection methods on-chip using impedance spectroscopy, which led to the development of the Inish Analyser, now being developed for applications including quality control for CAR-T cells. Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, Cellix built multiple distribution partnerships across Europe, the US and Asia, selling to both academic laboratories and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Many customers use Cellix's products as more representative alternatives to animal testing, where advantages of low blood volumes are important. In 2023, Cellix was acquired by Randox Laboratories. Following the acquisition, Cellix's skill-set in microfluidics is being applied at Randox to develop new diagnostic tests. The company remains active, and in August 2025 it announced the start of the EASYGEN project, an €8 million European consortium led by Fresenius to decentralize CAR-T cell therapy and improve hospital workflows.
